Sodium Borohydride/Chloranil-Based Assay for Quantifying Total Flavonoids
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2008A novel sodium borohydride/chloranil-based (SBC) assay for quantifying total flavonoids, including flavones, flavonols, flavonones, flavononols, isoflavonoids, flavanols, and anthocyanins, has been developed. Flavonoids with a 4-carbonyl group were reduced to flavanols using sodium borohydride catalyzed with aluminum chloride.

Journal of Natural Products, 2018The first total synthesis of the antiviral flavonoid houttuynoid A (1) has been achieved from aryl ketone 6 and benzofuran aldehyde 5 in nine linear steps. The C6-C3-C6 structure of the flavonoid was synthesized by an I2-catalyzed oxa-Michael addition of a chalcone intermediate, generated by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of 5 and 6.

Quantitative determination of total flavonoids in bilberry shoots
Pharmaceutical Chemistry Journal, 2013The main flavonoid glycoside from bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) shoots was isolated and identified preliminarily as quercetin-3-O-xyloside. Amethod for quantitative determination of flavonoids in bilberry shoots based on differential spectrophotometry at analytical wavelength 420 nm with complexation by aluminum chloride was developed.
