The low fasting serum C‐peptide level was associated with reduced sural nerve action potential amplitudes: A cross‐sectional study of Japanese type 2 diabetes

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, EarlyView.
Low fasting serum C‐peptide levels were independently associated with abnormal sural nerve action potential amplitude measured by DPNCheck® in patients with type 2 diabetes. Fasting serum C‐peptide may serve as a clinically relevant marker for diabetic polyneuropathy. ABSTRACT Aims/Introduction The association between the fasting serum C‐peptide levels

The cochlear morphometry compendium: High‐resolution synchrotron measurements and normative reference values

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
In this study, 100 cadaveric temporal bones underwent synchrotron radiation phase‐contrast imaging. Images were segmented to produce 3D surface mesh models for morphological analysis. Measurements obtained for all cochleae included: standard gross dimensions, various cochlear lengths including basilar membrane length, detailed intracochlear scalar ...

Neuroanatomy education through the years: Revisiting the teaching slides used by Sir Wilfrid Edward Le Gros Clark

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
This paper examines the life and legacy of British anatomist Sir Wilfrid Le Gros Clark through his neuroanatomical teaching collection at the University of Oxford. The authors catalogued 103 specimens and analyzed selected slides—including cases of multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, tabes dorsalis, syringomyelia, and the pineal gland's ...

The feline sacroiliac joint: An overview of its innervation and morphology

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The sacroiliac joint of the domestic cat was examined, with a focus on the innervation and morphology of its auricular surface. The study revealed that the last lumbar and the first sacral spinal nerves run within the dorsal sacroiliac ligament, a finding that was confirmed microscopically.

Recognizing Signs of Abusive Head Trauma

open access: yesJournal of Paediatrics and Child Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Abusive head trauma (AHT) remains the leading cause of fatal traumatic brain injury in infants and young children. Diagnosis is frequently delayed or missed due to nonspecific clinical presentation and unreliable histories, making neuroimaging a critical component of the diagnostic process. Objective This review synthesises computed

Epigenetic signatures of attention problems in youth with childhood exposure to family and community violence

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, EarlyView.
Aim The link between violence‐related epigenetic changes and attentional problems (APs) is still not well understood. This article examines if exposure to family and community violence during childhood and adolescence may shape DNA methylation patterns associated with attention in youth.

Elevated Levels of Blood Neurofilament Light Chain in Substance‐Using Populations: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, EarlyView.
Substance‐use disorders are increasingly linked to structural and functional brain alterations consistent with neuroaxonal injury. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a sensitive blood‐based marker of axonal damage, but evidence in substance‐using populations remains fragmented.

Of mice and men—The emerging oral–gut–brain axis of health and disease

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives Oral health's inextricable links to systemic health are highlighted by the emerging oral–gut–brain axis and other well‐known axes. There is growing evidence of a complex oral–gut–brain axis linking mouth and gut microbiomes with the central nervous system.

Renal and Functional Vulnerability in Hansen Disease: A Framework for Chronic Infectious Disability in Endemic Settings

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Hansen disease is a neglected infectious disease associated with reactional inflammation, neuropathy and long‐term disability. Renal involvement and sarcopenia have been described separately, but their clinical coexistence has received limited attention. This review examines evidence for a hypothesised renal–functional vulnerability
