Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

BopN is a Gatekeeper of the Bordetella Type III Secretion System

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
The classical Bordetella species infect the respiratory tract of mammals. While B. bronchiseptica causes rather chronic respiratory infections in a variety of mammals, the human-adapted species B. pertussis and B.

Visualization of the type III secretion mediated Salmonella–host cell interface using cryo-electron tomography

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2018
Many important gram-negative bacterial pathogens use highly sophisticated type III secretion systems (T3SSs) to establish complex host-pathogen interactions.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Animal Models of Type III Secretion System-Mediated Pathogenesis

open access: yesPathogens, 2019
The type III secretion system (T3SS) is a conserved virulence factor used by many Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria and has become an important target for anti-virulence drugs.

Chlamydia trachomatis TmeB antagonizes actin polymerization via direct interference with Arp2/3 activity

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2023
Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen that actively promotes invasion of epithelial cells. A virulence-associated type III secretion system contributes to chlamydial entry and at least four effectors have been described that are ...

Bacterial flagella and type III secretion systems [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2001
Certain classes of pathogenic bacteria secrete virulence proteins in a Sec-independent manner, by a mechanism known as type III secretion. The main body of the export apparatus specific for virulence proteins is identified as a needle complex, which has a similar structural organization to flagella. The two structures share several proteins with highly

Factors triggering type III secretion in Pseudomonas aeruginosa [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology, 2005
The type III secretion system ofPseudomonas aeruginosais tightly regulated by various environmental signals, such as low calcium and contact with the host cell. However, the exact signals triggering type III secretion are unknown. The present study describes the finding that secretion ofP.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...
