The Architecture of the Cytoplasmic Region of Type III Secretion Systems [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
AbstractType III secretion systems (T3SSs) are essential devices in the virulence of many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. They mediate injection of protein effectors of virulence from bacteria into eukaryotic host cells to manipulate them during infection. T3SSs involved in virulence (vT3SSs) are evolutionarily related to bacterial flagellar protein

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

YscP, a key player in the type three secretion system of "Yersinia enterocolitica" [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The Yersinia injectisome needle has a constant length of around 60nm. Mutants affected in the yscP gene display abnormally long needles, suggesting that needle length is genetically controlled and that YscP is involved in this process. First, both N- and

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Characterisation of the effects of salicylidene acylhydrazide compounds on type three secretion in Escherichia coli O157:H7 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Recent work has highlighted a number of compounds that target bacterial virulence by affecting gene regulation. In this work, we show that small-molecule inhibitors affect the expression of the type III secretion system (T3SS) of <i>Escherichia ...

Lactoferrin inhibits E. coli O157:H7 growth and attachment to intestinal epithelial cells

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2010
Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) serotype O157:H7 strains are associated with haemorraghic colitis and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in humans. Cattle are a reservoir of E. coli O157:H7. We studied the ability of bovine and human lactoferrin,

Expression of and secretion through the Aeromonas salmonicida type III secretion system [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology, 2006
Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is the aetiological agent of furunculosis, a disease of farmed and wild salmonids. The type III secretion system (TTSS) is one of the primary virulence factors in A. salmonicida. Using a combination of differential proteomic analysis and reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR, it is shown that A ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Established microbial colonies can survive type VI secretion assault [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Type VI secretion (T6S) is a cell-to-cell injection system that can be used as a microbial weapon. T6S kills vulnerable cells, and is present in close to 25% of sequenced Gram-negative bacteria.

Antibacterial Effect of Berberrubine on the Type III Secretion System

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2023
The increasing antimicrobial drug resistance of Salmonella typhimurium has been a major public health problem in many countries. The type III secretion system (TTSS) of S typhimurium is an attractive target for the development of new antibiotics against ...
