Upregulated NOTCH2 Expression Is Implicated in the Clinical Aggressiveness of Atypical Fibroxanthoma and Pleomorphic Dermal Sarcoma

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dermatology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS) represent clinicopathological variants of a spectrum. It is known that AFX and PDS tumors harbor frequent NOTCH1/2 mutations. However, the expression of Notch signaling pathway‐associated proteins in both tumor cells has not been studied before.

Litter sex composition influences plasma prolactin levels but not the melanin‐concentrating hormone immunoreactive neurons in the medial preoptic area of late lactating Long‐Evans rats

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, EarlyView.
Influence of litter sex composition on maternal prolactin levels and MCH‐immunoreactive (MCH‐ir) neurons in the vmMPOA of lactating rats. The sex ratio of litters affects maternal physiology, specifically increasing prolactin levels and altering weight gain patterns, while food and water intake and MCH‐ir neuron counts remain unchanged.

Skin development in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica)—From skin respiration to thermoregulation

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The skin development in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has been examined using histological, morphometric, and μCT methods. During a long period of postnatal development, the structural differentiation of the skin results in a functional shift from transcutaneous gas exchange to thermoregulation in later life. Abstract Marsupials

Gene Expression Shifts in Emperor Penguin Adaptation to the Extreme Antarctic Environment

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gene expression can accelerate ecological divergence by rapidly tweaking the response of an organism to novel environments, with more divergent environments exerting stronger selection and supposedly, requiring faster adaptive responses. Organisms adapted to extreme environments provide ideal systems to test this hypothesis, particularly when ...

Evidence of Intraspecific Adaptive Variation in the American Pika (Ochotona princeps) on a Continental Scale Using a Target Enrichment and Mitochondrial Genome Skimming Approach

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Montane landscapes present an array of abiotic challenges that drive adaptive evolution amongst organisms. These adaptations can promote habitat specialisation, which may heighten the risk of extirpation from environmental change. For example, higher metabolic rates in an endothermic species may contribute to heightened cold tolerance, whilst ...

Mixed Outcomes in Recombination Rates After Domestication: Revisiting Theory and Data

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The process of domestication has altered many phenotypes. Selection on these phenotypes has long been hypothesised to indirectly select for increases in the genome‐wide recombination rate. This hypothesis is potentially consistent with theory on the evolution of the recombination rate, but empirical support has been unclear. We review relevant
