Arginine Metabolic Disruption Impairs Hair Regeneration via ROS‐Mediated Inactivation of mTOR Signaling in Androgenetic Alopecia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Arginine deficiency accelerates androgenetic alopecia. Serum metabolome shows reduced circulating arginine, while local metabolic disruption depletes follicular reserves, triggering reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and mTOR suppression that induce hair miniaturization.

Acidosis Forces Fatty Acid Uptake and Metabolism in Cancer Cells Regardless of Genotype

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that biological acidosis, commonly observed in tumors and ischemic conditions, actively promotes the protonation of fatty acids, thereby facilitating the uptake of their neutral forms. Consequently, the preference for lipid metabolism in acid‐exposed cells does not arise from genetic reprogramming that prioritizes lipids as the ...

Endoplasmic reticulum stress and liver diseases

open access: yesLiver Research, 2019
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress occurs when ER homeostasis is perturbed with accumulation of unfolded/misfolded protein or calcium depletion. The unfolded protein response (UPR), comprising of inositol-requiring enzyme 1α (IRE1α), double-stranded RNA ...

Cytomegalovirus downregulates IRE1 to repress the unfolded protein response. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2013
During viral infection, a massive demand for viral glycoproteins can overwhelm the capacity of the protein folding and quality control machinery, leading to an accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). To restore ER homeostasis,

The Critical Role of Enhanced OXPHOS and Mitochondrial Hyperpolarization in Simulated Microgravity‐Induced Oocyte Maturation Arrest

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Simulated microgravity induces distinct mitochondrial hyperactivation patterns‐elevated OXPHOS and MMP‐which accelerate meiosis without SAC failure but delays MTOC coalescence, leading to spindle defects and meiotic arrest. Prolonging M‐phase restores MTOC assembly and oocyte maturation.

The Unfolded Protein Response Pathway in the Yeast Kluyveromyces lactis. A Comparative View among Yeast Species

open access: yesCells, 2018
Eukaryotic cells have evolved signalling pathways that allow adaptation to harmful conditions that disrupt endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis.

ZIKV infection activates the IRE1-XBP1 and ATF6 pathways of unfolded protein response in neural cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: Many viruses depend on the extensive membranous network of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) for their translation, replication, and packaging. Certain membrane modifications of the ER can be a trigger for ER stress, as well as the accumulation ...

Alternative Models for Anticancer Drug Discovery From Natural Products Using Binary Tumor‐Microenvironment‐on‐a‐Chip

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a binary tumor‐microenvironment‐on‐a‐chip (T‐MOC) system incorporating multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTs) as an alternative preclinical platform to evaluate the efficacy of anticancer natural products. The T‐MOC model reproduces in vivo drug delivery barriers and physiological conditions, enabling morphological analysis to predict

The unfolded protein response signaling pathways in molluscs

open access: yesInvertebrate Survival Journal, 2018
Unfolded protein response (UPR) as collective signal transduction pathways is essential for surviving the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in vertebrates and invertebrates.

Dual role for the unfolded protein response in the ovary: adaption and apoptosis

open access: yesProtein & Cell, 2016
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the principal organelle responsible for several specific cellular functions including synthesis and folding of secretory or membrane proteins, lipid metabolism, and Ca2+ storage.
