CSE-Derived Hydrogen Sulfide Safeguards Vascular Iron Homeostasis by Coupling Ferritin Buffering to Vasoprotection. [PDF]

open access: yesFASEB J
With iron overload, wild‐type (CSE+/+) mice upregulate their CSE and ferritin expression, limiting oxidative stress and maintaining vascular health. In contrast, CSE‐deficient (CSE−/−) mice fail to induce ferritin, leading to elevated oxidative stress, vascular remodeling, and hypertension.

The roles of the novel RNA-binding protein ANKHD1 in shear stress-mediated endothelial dependent-vasoprotection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Rationale and Hypothesis: Cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis is a chronic cardiovascular disease, caused by the accumulation of lipids in large and medium arteries.

Fasting as Medicine: Mitochondrial and Endothelial Rejuvenation in Vascular Aging. [PDF]

open access: yesAging Cell
Aging impairs cerebrovascular health by driving mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, endothelial failure, and neurovascular uncoupling, leading to BBB breakdown and cognitive decline. In contrast, time‐restricted feeding/eating counteracts these mechanisms by restoring mitochondrial function, activating adaptive nutrient‐sensing pathways ...

Protective effects of nattokinase against microvasculopathy and neuroinflammation in diabetic retinopathy 纳豆激酶对糖尿病视网膜病变微血管病变和神经炎症的保护作用

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 15, Issue 10, Page 866-880, October 2023., 2023
Highlights Nattokinase rescued endothelial dysfunction and pericyte loss in the diabetic retina. Nattokinase attenuated diabetes‐induced retinal inflammation and neurodegeneration. High mobility group box 1 signaling was involved in nattokinase‐mediated retinal protection.

Targeting Heme Oxygenase-1 in the Arterial Response to Injury and Disease

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2020
Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) catalyzes the degradation of heme into carbon monoxide (CO), iron, and biliverdin, which is rapidly metabolized to bilirubin. The activation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) plays a critical role in mediating the aberrant ...

Big Things, Small Packages: An Update on Microalgae as Sustainable Sources of Nutraceutical Peptides for Promoting Cardiovascular Health

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, Volume 7, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
Microalgae biomass has tremendous potential as a sustainable source of alternative proteins. Enzymatic processing of microalgae proteins yields structurally diverse peptides with multiple biofunctional properties. This review discusses recent developments in microalgae protein‐derived bioactive peptides relevant in cardiovascular disease management ...

Paracrine effects of bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells: cyclooxygenase-2/prostacyclin pathway in pulmonary arterial hypertension. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction is the pathophysiological characteristic of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Some paracrine factors secreted by bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells (BMEPCs) have the potential to strengthen ...
