Experimental verification of vehicle platoon control algorithms

open access: yesPeriodica Polytechnica Transportation Engineering, 2013
Organizing a group of vehicles into a vehicle platoon in a way that, except for the leading vehicle, each platoon member can be autonomously driven has been a research goal for decades. Among other benefits this results in a decrease of fuel consump- tion and also in the driver’s workload and an increase in a better use of road capacity.

Explainable reinforcement learning for improved traffic signal control

open access: yesComputer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Volume 40, Issue 24, Page 3911-3933, 6 October 2025.
Abstract Reinforcement learning has become a popular approach for traffic signal control, but its complexity often hinders practical application. To improve this, we propose a deep Q‐network framework with an attention mechanism inspired by how traffic police manage intersections.

A comprehensive overview of the alignment between platoon control approaches and clustering strategies

open access: yesGreen Energy and Intelligent Transportation
Platoon formation focuses on effectively coordinating the speeds of vehicles within a group, with automatic speed adjustments for each vehicle to maintain a desired formation.

An enhanced approach for weaving area capacity estimation combining high‐fidelity simulation and interpretable machine learning

open access: yesComputer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Volume 40, Issue 25, Page 4273-4295, 20 October 2025.
Abstract Accurately assessing weaving area capacity is critical for optimizing traffic management. However, transportation agencies face a persistent challenge: Existing capacity models often inadequately characterize vehicle weaving behaviors and fail to quantify the interactions between influencing factors.

Urban Transformations, Emergencies, and Disasters in Los Angeles: Constructing Civilian Unpreparedness as a Public Policy Issue (1940–1980)

open access: yesRisk, Hazards &Crisis in Public Policy, Volume 16, Issue 3, September 2025.
ABSTRACT This article explores the sociohistorical construction of civilian unpreparedness as a public policy issue in Los Angeles, arguing that it emerged not as a neutral response to escalating urban risks, but as a mechanism through which actors negotiated power dynamics amid urban transformations between 1940 and 1980.

Estimation of passing sight distance required for operation of truck platooning on two-lane highways in North America

open access: yesIATSS Research
The most well-known benefits of heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) platooning include fuel savings and emission reductions. In addition, HCV platooning under SAE automation level 4 or 5 can mitigate the truck driver shortage in North America by eliminating ...

Development of a Stability Index for Evaluating Drivers’ Psychological Stability During Truck Platooning

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study proposes a stability index to quantitatively evaluate the psychological stability of drivers during truck platooning. Truck platooning is a technique in which a manually driven lead truck is followed by automated trucks using V2X communication

Vehicle Platooning with Multiple Vehicle Look-ahead Information

open access: yesIFAC-PapersOnLine, 2017
Abstract In this work, we consider the effects of multiple vehicle look ahead in a vehicle platoon that employs a constant spacing policy (CSP) based controller in the presence of parasitic lags. We first consider a CSP controller for longitudinal dynamics that uses position, velocity and acceleration from ‘r’ predecessor vehicles.
