Viral diversity limits immune diversity in asymptomatic phase of HIV infection

open access: yesTheoretical Population Biology, 2008
We propose a new diversity threshold theory which states that the specific CTLs to the viral strain become inactivated (that is, some HIV strain can escape from its specific immune response) when the diversity of HIV strains exceeds some threshold number. We call this number "immune diversity threshold".

Viral Diversity and Its Relationship With Environmental Factors at the Surface and Deep Sea of Prydz Bay, Antarctica

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
A viral metagenomic analysis of five surface and two bottom water (878 meters below surface, mbs, and 3,357 mbs) samples from Prydz Bay, was conducted during February–March 2015.

The Aging Blood: Cellular Origins, Circulating Drivers, and Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
As a conduit linking all organs, the blood system both reflects and actively drives systemic aging. This review highlights how circulating pro‐aging and antiaging factors and age‐associated hematopoietic stem cell dysfunction contribute to immunosenescence and multi‐organ decline, positioning the hematopoietic system as a target for aging intervention.

Broad Surveys of DNA Viral Diversity Obtained through Viral Metagenomics of Mosquitoes

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Viruses are the most abundant and diverse genetic entities on Earth; however, broad surveys of viral diversity are hindered by the lack of a universal assay for viruses and the inability to sample a sufficient number of individual hosts. This study utilized vector-enabled metagenomics (VEM) to provide a snapshot of the diversity of DNA viruses present ...

Deep Learning–Assisted Differentiation of Four Peripheral Neuropathies Using Corneal Confocal Microscopy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Peripheral neuropathies contribute to patient disability but may be diagnosed late or missed altogether due to late referral, limitation of current diagnostic methods and lack of specialized testing facilities. To address this clinical gap, we developed NeuropathAI, an interpretable deep learning–based multiclass classification ...

Membrane Bioreactor-Based Wastewater Treatment Plant in Saudi Arabia: Reduction of Viral Diversity, Load, and Infectious Capacity

open access: yes, 2017
A membrane bioreactor (MBR)-based wastewater treatment plant in Saudi Arabia was assessed over a nine-month period for virus removal efficiency. Viral diversity was detected using omics-based approaches.

From virus isolation to metagenome generation for investigating viral diversity in deep-sea sediments

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Viruses are the most abundant and, likely, one of the most diverse biological components in the oceans. By infecting their hosts, they play key roles in biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem functioning at a global scale.

Super‐Refractory Status Epilepticus (SRSE) in a Patient With Compound Heterozygous OPA1 Variants: Case Report and Literature Review

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Super‐Refractory Status Epilepticus (SRSE) is a rare, life‐threatening neurological emergency with unclear etiology in many cases. Mitochondrial dysfunction, often due to disease‐causing genetic variants, is increasingly recognized as a cause, with each gene producing distinct pathophysiological mechanisms.

Molecular and biological diversity of HIV-1 in Brazil

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1992
To determine the genomic polymorphism and biological properties present in HIV-1 Brazilian isolates, were analyzed five viral isolates obtained from patients residing in Rio de Janeiro (P1 and P5), São Paulo (P3) and Bahia (P2 and P4) states.

Metagenomic analysis of viral diversity in respiratory samples from patients with respiratory tract infections in Kuwait

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, 2017
A metagenomic approach based on target independent next‐generation sequencing has become a known method for the detection of both known and novel viruses in clinical samples. This study aimed to use the metagenomic sequencing approach to characterize the
