Fullerene Derivatives Attenuate Bronchoconstriction Induced by Xanthine-Xanthine OxidaseX
Fullerene Science and Technology, 1997Abstract The intratracheal instillation of xanthine-xanthine oxidase caused a marked decrease in dynamic respiratory compliance, indicating airway constriction. The constriction was significantly attenuated by fullerenol-1, but not by other agents or receptor antagonists.

An investigation was undertaken of the effect on the purine metabolism of the rat of 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-formyl pteridine, known to inhibit xanthine oxidase, and sodium bromide, reported to retard uricopoiesis. Neither the intraperitoneal administration of the pteridine nor the oral administration of sodium bromide significantly lowered the tissue ...

Ischaemic Brain Oedema and Xanthine-Xanthine Oxidase System
1990The formation of oxygen-derived free radicals in cerebral ischaemia has been implicated in altering the BBB permeability, cause oedema and tissue damage. However little attention has been paid regarding the involvement of xanthine oxidase in the cerebral ischaemic events.

The observation of a weak reddish fluorescence to ultraviolet light at 253 nm wave length in a chromatographic plate destined to identify purine bases contained in a vesical calculus of V.Y. (11-7), member of our second family of hereditary xanthinuria,1, made us suspect the presence of porphyrins or of pharmacological agents adsorbed by the purines ...
