Phase Separation Regulates Metabolism, Mitochondria, and Diseases

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 6, Issue 7, July 2025.
Mitochondrion‐related liquid–liquid phase separation. (1) Phase separation mediates the self‐assembly of mitochondrial nucleoids (mt‐nucleoids). (2) Phase segregation mediates the formation of mitochondrial RNA granules (MRGs). (3) Phase separation mediates the formation of mitochondrial degradosomes.

Purification and properties of milk xanthine dehydrogenase.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1992
Milk xanthine oxidase (XO) has been prepared in a dehydrogenase form (XDH) by purifying the enzyme in the presence of 2.5 mM dithiothreitol. Unlike XO, which reacts rapidly only with oxygen and not with NAD, the XDH form of the enzyme reacts rapidly with NAD. XDH has a turnover number for the NAD-dependent conversion of xanthine to urate of 380 mol/min/

Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 12, Page 1760-1780, June 2025.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

Relationship between plasma xanthine oxidoreductase activity and left ventricular ejection fraction and hypertrophy among cardiac patients.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Background and purposeXanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), which catalyzes purine catabolism, has two interconvertible forms, xanthine dehydrogenase and xanthine oxidase, the latter of which produces superoxide during uric acid (UA) synthesis.

Malondialdehyde as an independent predictor of body mass index in adolescent girls [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Biochemistry, 2023
Background: Given the fact that the studies that examined oxidative stress in relation to obesity that included late adolescents are scarce and show inconclusive results we aimed to investigate a wide spectrum of nitro-oxidative stress biomarkers i.e ...

LncRNA‐MEG3 Regulates Muscle Mass and Metabolic Homeostasis by Facilitating SUZ12 Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 23, June 20, 2025.
This study has identified lncRNA‐MEG3 as a key regulator of muscle mass, promoting slow‐twitch muscle fibers and preventing muscle atrophy. By stabilizing the SUZ12/PRC2 complex through liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS), lncRNA‐MEG3 influences mitochondrial function and lipid metabolism.

Communications Among Neurocytes in Parkinson's Disease Regulated by Differential Metabolism and Blood‐Brain Barrier Traversing of Chiral Gold Cluster‐MOF Integrated Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 23, June 20, 2025.
This study have loaded chiral gold nanoclusters onto the inner and outer surfaces of ZIF and uncovers the biodistribution, metabolic variances, and therapeutic mechanism of chiral nanoparticles, providing deep insights into the nanobiological effects of chiral anti‐inflammatory nanomedicines in PD therapy for future clinical transformation.

Sex‐specific associations of Roseburia with uric acid metabolism and hyperuricemia risk in females

open access: yesiMetaOmics, Volume 2, Issue 2, June 2025.
Researchers recruited 623 participants, including 270 females, and used 16S rDNA sequencing to investigate gender differences in hyperuricemia. In healthy females, Roseburia was enriched, positively correlating with estrogen and negatively with uric acid, suggesting it is a potential biomarker affecting uric acid levels in females.

Conversion of Rat Xanthine Dehydrogenase to Xanthine Oxidase during Oxidative Stress [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
The enzyme “xanthine oxidase” is one of the best characterized sources of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide. “In vivo” it mainly acts as a dehydrogenase which, by reducing NAD+, appears to be the physiologic form. Nevertheless under a variety of conditions the enzyme can undergo a conversion to an oxidase which delivers the electrons to oxygen to ...
