Membrane-Based Downstream Processing of Microbial Xylitol Production

open access: yesInternational Journal of Technology, 2017
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener in the food industry. Xylitol can be produced from D-xylose using a fermentation process, but it then needs to be separated from the other components of the fermentation broth (e.g., metabolic products ...

Biomimetic and Compressible Wood Phase Change Gel With Hierarchically Aligned Lamellar Structure for Controlled Thermal Management

open access: yesCarbon Energy, EarlyView.
Inspired by skeletal muscle thermogenesis, a wood phase change gel exhibiting mechano‐controlled heat release is developed. Under compression, the wood phase change gel overcomes its energy barrier, inducing its phase change from supercooling to crystallization and raising its overall temperature by around 5°C.

Carbohydrate Wastes to Chemicals (CtC): From Second‐Generation Sugars to Glycols

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
The Carbohydrate Wastes to Chemicals (CtC) project examined an alternative and sustainable route to the production of glycols with propylene glycol as the main product. Thereby, the utilization of carbohydrate‐containing residues as second‐generation sugars was researched as alternative biogenic feedstock from biomass.
