What determines hatchling weight: breeder age or incubated egg weight?

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Poultry Science, 2011
Two experiments were carried out to determine which factor influences weight at hatch of broiler chicks: breeder age or incubated egg weight. In Experiment 1, 2340 eggs produced by 29- and 55-week-old Ross® broiler breeders were incubated.

Effect of Egg Yolk Size on Yolk Cholesterol Concentration.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1963
SummaryWithin a line of birds, there was an inverse relation between size of the yolk and cholesterol concentration of the yolk. On a dry weight basis there was a difference between the regression coefficients for 2 strains with respect to yolk cholesterol. A differential rate of cholesterol transfer into the follicle existed between strains.

Vascular remodeling of the mouse yolk sac requires hemodynamic force [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The embryonic heart and vessels are dynamic and form and remodel while functional. Much has been learned about the genetic mechanisms underlying the development of the cardiovascular system, but we are just beginning to understand how changes in heart ...

On the Structure of a Hen's Egg Yolk and Yolk Spheres

open access: yesJapanese poultry science, 1971
1. Yolk of a egg was fixed with 10% acrolein-0.05M phoshate buffer (pH 7.4) of LUFT11) by keeping in a cold dark place for 5-7 days and frazen sections of 3-7μ thickness, usually of 5μ, were prepared. Some of the sections were stained for lipid with Sudan IV or Sudan Black B-55% ethanol solution, 1% Nile Blue A solution, or BAKER'S acid hematein. Other

Dietary yolk supplementation decreases rates of yolk deposition in Japanese quail

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, 2022
AbstractGeneration of egg yolk by birds requires the synthesis and deposition of large amounts of protein and lipid, and is often accompanied by the incorporation of additional physiological mediators. While there has been much work examining the relative quantities of yolk components, as well as potential adaptive patterns of their allocation, we ...

Polarized cortical tension drives zebrafish epiboly movements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The principles underlying the biomechanics of morphogenesis are largely unknown. Epiboly is an essential embryonic event in which three tissues coordinate to direct the expansion of the blastoderm.
