The kidney tight junction [PDF]
The tight junction is an important subcellular organelle which plays a vital role in epithelial barrier function. Claudin, as the integral membrane component of tight junctions, creates a paracellular transport pathway for various ions to be reabsorbed ...

Cellular Stress, Inflammation and Barrier Damage in Gut Epithelial Cells Caused by Aspartame
This study shows that aspartame, at dietary‐relevant doses, induces cytotoxicity, cellular distress associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, DNA replication and repair mechanism disturbance culminating in epithelial barrier damage.

Background Brain microvascular endothelial cells form a highly selective blood brain barrier regulated by the endothelial tight junctions. Cerebral ischemia selectively targets tight junction protein complexes, which leads to significant damage to ...

Comparative analysis between cigarette smokers and HnB users revealed similar inflammatory lung function parameters and immunophenotypic patterns. Cigarette smoke and HnB aerosol had an impact on ECM through divergent downstream pathways. Exposed to Cigarette smoke and HnB aerosol caused comparative TJ weakening in the epithelial barrier.

Background and Purpose Human adenovirus (HAdV) causes respiratory or gastrointestinal tract infections depending on the virus subtype. While HAdV infections are generally self‐limiting in immunocompetent people, they can result in significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised adults and children.

A guide to the types, structures, and multifaceted functions of matrix metalloproteinases in cancer
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) orchestrate cancer progression and metastasis through proteolytic and non‐proteolytic actions. By remodeling the tumor microenvironment, enhancing growth factor availability, and modulating cell behavior, MMPs promote proliferation, migration or invasion, and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition. Alongside extracellular

HIV-1 transgene expression in rats causes oxidant stress and alveolar epithelial barrier dysfunction
Background HIV-infected individuals are at increased risk for acute and chronic airway disease even though there is no evidence that the virus can infect the lung epithelium.

Functional complexes between YAP2 and ZO-2 are PDZ domain-dependent, and regulate YAP2 nuclear localization and signalling [PDF]
he Hippo pathway regulates the size of organs by controlling two opposing processes: proliferation and apoptosis. YAP2 (Yes kinase-associated protein 2), one of the three isoforms of YAP, is a WW domain-containing transcriptional co-activator that acts ...

EHD4 and ASAP2 are critical negative regulators of the claudin‐5‐based endothelial barrier
Cell‐surface CLDN‐5 protein levels can be evaluated using a probe that can bind to the extracellular domains of CLDN‐5. A probe derived from Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin allows us to isolate cells with high CLDN‐5 protein levels from a knockout cell library.

Zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) is involved in morula to blastocyst transformation in the mouse
It is unknown whether or not tight junction formation plays any role in morula to blastocyst transformation that is associated with development of polarized trophoblast cells and fluid accumulation. Tight junctions are a hallmark of polarized epithelial cells and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) is a known key regulator of tight junction formation.
