From wild to tamed: Reimagining novel crops through omics and local plant diversity

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The global food system faces growing pressure from climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising nutritional demands. Agriculture has increased yields but reduced crop diversity, flavor, and nutritional quality, leaving societies vulnerable and dependent on a narrow set of staple species.

Matured Hop Bitter Acids in Beer Improve Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Depression-Like Behavior

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2019
Recent studies have demonstrated a close association between neural inflammation and development of mental illnesses, such as depression. Clinical trials have reported that treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is associated with reduced ...

Effects of Bitter Melon Saponin on the Glucose and Lipid Metabolism in HepG2 Cell and C. elegans

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality, 2020
This study tried to explore how saponins from bitter melon (BMS) affect the glucose and lipid metabolism in palmitic acid-treated HepG2 cell and glucose-treated Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans).

Testing optimal defense theory: Root resistance selection in chicory (Cichorium intybus) reduces foliar defense and alters aphid performance and feeding behavior

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Root‐focused resistance in chicory reduces defenses in leaves, impairing root aphids but enhancing foliar aphid performance. Selecting root resistance can create unintended trade‐offs across plant organs. Abstract BACKGROUND Plants are constantly exposed to a wide range of herbivores at both aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) levels, involving ...

A survey and a molecular dynamics study on the (central) hydrophobic region of prion proteins

open access: yes, 2014
Prion diseases are invariably fatal neurodegenerative diseases that affect humans and animals. Unlike most other amyloid forming neurodegenerative diseases, these can be highly infectious. Prion diseases occur in a variety of species.

Adaptation of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii to a specialized nutritional niche

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Unlike most Drosophila larvae that feed on spoiled food, Drosophila suzukii larvae thrive on ripening fruits and consequently face a low‐protein, high‐carbohydrate nutritional challenge. Comparisons of growth among D. suzukii, D. biarmipes, and D. melanogaster larvae across diets with varying protein‐to‐carbohydrate ratios demonstrate that D.

The multidimensional regulation roles and mechanisms of calcium in fruit quality

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
This review explores how calcium signaling molecule integrates plant hormones, environmental cues, and developmental signals to influence external fruit traits, internal nutritional properties, and physiological disorders. ABSTRACT Calcium (Ca2+), a dual‐functional mineral that serves both as an essential structural factor and a signaling molecule ...

Natural products for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. High blood sugar can produce long-term complications such as cardiovascular and renal disorders, retinopathy, and poor blood flow. Its development can be prevented
