Extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESβLs) are enzymes which have evolved from bacteria upon exposure to penicillins antibiotics. Such bacteria have developed resistance to Beta lactam antibiotics and their relatives such as cephalosporins (extended spectrum beta lactam antibiotics).
