Increased Indoleamine-2,3-Dioxygenase Activity Is Associated With Poor Clinical Outcome in Adults Hospitalized With Influenza in the INSIGHT FLU003Plus Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: Indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) mediated tryptophan (TRP) depletion has antimicrobial and immuno-regulatory effects. Increased kynurenine (KYN)-to-TRP (KT) ratios, reflecting increased IDO activity, have been associated with poorer outcomes

Caenorhabditis elegans orthologs of human genes differentially expressed with age are enriched for determinants of longevity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We report a systematic RNAi longevity screen of 82 Caenorhabditis elegans genes selected based on orthology to human genes differentially expressed with age. We find substantial enrichment in genes for which knockdown increased lifespan.

Rapamycin Treatment Ameliorates Age-Related Accumulation of Toxic Metabolic Intermediates in Brains of the Ts65Dn Mouse Model of Down Syndrome and Aging

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2018
Down syndrome (DS), caused by trisomy of chromosome 21, is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability. Individuals with DS exhibit changes in neurochemistry and neuroanatomy that worsen with age, neurological delay in learning and memory ...

Modulation of Enzyme Activity in the Kynurenine Pathway by Kynurenine Monooxygenase Inhibition

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2019
The kynurenine pathway is the major route for tryptophan metabolism in mammals. Several of the metabolites in the kynurenine pathway, however, are potentially toxic, particularly 3-hydroxykynurenine, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, and quinolinic acid ...

Oxidative stress in bacteria and protein damage by reactive oxygen species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The advent of O2 in the atmosphere was among the first major pollution events occurred on earth The reaction between ferrous iron, very abundant in the reductive early atmosphere, and oxygen results in the formation of harmful superoxide and hydroxyl ...

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation mediates kidney disease and renal cell carcinoma. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a well-known ligand-activated cytoplasmic transcription factor that contributes to cellular responses against environmental toxins and carcinogens.
