Ester‐Aroyl‐S,N‐Ketene Acetals with Solid‐State Luminescence: AIEgens from Sequential Three‐Component Desymmetrization

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
The difference in nucleophilicity of alcohols and S,N‐ketene acetals sets the stage for the desymmetrizing acylation of diaroyl chlorides in a consecutive one‐pot fashion in good yields. The ester‐functionalized aroyl‐S,N‐ketene acetals are solid‐state emitters that emit in solution only upon aggregation. Upon encapsulation in polystyrene nanoparticles,

Azobenzene‐Based Glycomacrocycles: Synthesis, Photoisomerization, and Photomodulation of Liquid Crystal Helical Pitch with Helix Inversion

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Macrocyclic glycoazobenzenes: Four new azobenzene‐functionalized glycomacrolactones bearing different substituents on the glucopyranoside ring have been synthesized. These photoswitchable chiral macrocycles behave as chiral dopants of NLCs, with an amplification of helix upon E to Z photoisomerization and enforcement of HTP at Z‐rich state.

Synthesis of Cyclobutane‐Containing Tricyclic β‐Lactams Based on a Saturated Scaffold Enabled by Iron‐catalysed [2 + 2]‐Cycloaddition

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
First syntheses of pyrrolidine‐, piperidine‐, and azepane tricyclic β‐lactams based on a saturated scaffold are achieved through an Fe‐pyrimidinediimine‐catalysed [2 + 2] cycloaddition of allylamines analogues followed by photo‐induced intramolecular C─H insertion.

Tuning the Excited State Character of Amine/Carbonyl Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters with Ring Fusion

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Ring fusion in MR‐TADF emitters can affect the charge transfer excited state and therefore the photophysical properties. Here we investigate the effect of ring fusion in two structurally similar molecules to identify the advantages and disadvantages of this strategy.
