Influence of MC1R Gene Variants on Coat Color of Indicine Cattle Breeds

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Indicine cattle display a broad range of coat colors, representing a relevant and breed‐defining trait required for registration in breeder association. Among the genes involved in pigmentation, MC1R stands out for modulating the synthesis of melanin‐related proteins and remains poorly explored in indicine cattle breeds. Therefore, we aimed to

Neurobehavioural Genes Associated With Growth in Dusky Kob (Argyrosomus japonicus)

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Growth is a complex trait, influenced by numerous genes and environmental factors that transect various physiological pathways. This study sought to characterise the relationship between neurobehavioural development genes and growth in dusky kob juveniles.

ASIP Variants in Livestock: It's Not Black and White

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Fur and feather pigmentation play an important role in the survival and reproduction of many species, as well as in selective breeding and agriculture. The synthesis of pigment molecules, eumelanin and pheomelanin, is partially regulated by the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) encoded by the ASIP gene.

Common requirements for melanocortin-4 receptor selectivity of structurally unrelated melanocortin agonist and endogenous antagonist, Agouti protein

open access: yes, 2001
The activity of melanocortin receptors (MCR) is regulated by melanocortin peptide agonists and by the endogenous antagonists, Agouti protein and AgRP (Agouti-related protein).

Hydroxy‐α‐Sanshools From Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. Alleviate Obesity in Mice via the Regulation of Appetite and Gut Microbiota

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Hydroxy‐alpha‐sanshool could modulate the expression of appetite‐related factors and the composition of intestinal microbiota in mice fed with a high‐fat diet by regulating food intake and maintaining energy homeostasis, which is consistent with the involvement of the gut‐brain axis in this regulatory mechanism.

A Polymorphism in the Human Agouti-Related Protein Is Associated with Late-Onset Obesity [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2002
The mouse agouti-related protein (AGRP) is a powerful appetite effector that results in hyperphagia and the development of obesity when administered intracerebroventricularly or when overexpressed in transgenic mice. Animal studies have also shown that exogenous administration of AGRP predisposes toward hedonic intake of high fat and high sucrose diets.

Cilia in Nervous System Development, Function, and Disease

open access: yesMedComm – Future Medicine, Volume 5, Issue 2, June 2026.
Cilia are evolutionarily conserved organelles that function as essential sensory and motility platforms in the nervous system. This review outlines key cilia‐dependent signaling pathways and their roles in neural development and function. Furthermore, it highlights how ciliary dysfunction can lead to a variety of neurological disorders, known as ...

Exploring Protein Sequence Space Using Computationally Directed Recombination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Evolution has provided us with many protein sequences. However, these sequences represent a very small fraction of the possible sequences. In the laboratory, scientists have explored areas of sequence space not represented by natural proteins both to ...

G Protein‐Coupled Receptor 17 (Gpr17) Enhances Leptin and Insulin Sensitivity in Lean and Obese Mouse Models

open access: yesObesity, Volume 34, Issue S1, Page 77-87, June 2026.
This study identifies G protein‐coupled receptor 17 (Gpr17) as a novel regulator of leptin and insulin sensitivity. Using complementary knockout models, we demonstrate that Gpr17 deletion enhances energy expenditure, restores leptin responsiveness, and improves insulin sensitivity, revealing Gpr17 as a potential therapeutic GPCR target for obesity and ...

Melatonin - leptin interaction and obesity-related genes

open access: yesTrakya University Journal of Natural Sciences
Most living organisms have circadian clocks which maintain rhythm in internal cycles of behavior, physiology, and metabolism, allowing them to anticipate the earth's 24-hour rota-tion.
