Dihydro-alpha-lipoic acid has more potent cytotoxicity than alpha-lipoic acid

open access: yesIn Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology - Animal, 2009
Alpha-lipoic acid has been shown to possess cancer-cell-killing activity via activation of the apoptosis pathway. In this study, the cytotoxic activities of alpha-lipoic and dihydro-alpha-lipoic acid were compared in HL-60 cells. The cell-killing activity of dihydro-alpha-lipoic acid was higher than that of alpha-lipoic acid.

BACE1 activity impairs neuronal glucose oxidation:rescue by beta-hydroxybutyrate and lipoic acid [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Glucose hypometabolism and impaired mitochondrial function in neurons have been suggested to play early and perhaps causative roles in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Activity of the aspartic acid protease, beta-site amyloid precursor protein (APP)

Studying the Effect of Adding Alpha Lipoic Acid to Gabapentin to Improve Nerve Conduction Velocity and Glycemic Control of Patients with Diabetic Neuropathy (Sample of Iraqi population)

open access: yesAl-Mustansiriyah Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2020
Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is the most common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus. Hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress induces programmed cell death of nerves, which contributes to the pathology of Diabetic neuropathy. Many clinical trials depend

Clinical, biochemical, and genetic spectrum of seven patients with NFU1 deficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Disorders of the mitochondrial energy metabolism are clinically and genetically heterogeneous. An increasingly recognized subgroup is caused by defective mitochondrial iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster biosynthesis, with defects in 13 genes being linked to ...

A dual action of alpha-lipoic acid in the brain: an electrophysiological evaluation [PDF]

open access: yesArquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria, 2003
Oxidative stress causes metabolic and structural abnormalities during reperfusion. In an animal model of electrophysiological evaluation of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion, alpha-lipoic acid effect on the oxidative stress was studied by mean absolute ...
