Subgenomic Reporter RNA System for Detection of Alphavirus Infection in Mosquitoes

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Current methods for detecting real-time alphavirus (Family Togaviridae) infection in mosquitoes require the use of recombinant viruses engineered to express a visibly detectable reporter protein.

Insect response to alphavirus infection—Establishment of alphavirus persistence in insect cells involves inhibition of viral polyprotein cleavage

open access: yesVirus Research, 2010
Alphavirus persistence in the insect vector is an essential element in the vector-host transmission cycle of the virus and provides a model to study the biochemical and molecular basis for virus-vector coexistence. The prototype alphavirus Sindbis (SV) establishes persistent infections in invertebrate cell cultures which are characterized by low levels

[Morphological study of a mixed alphavirus infection].

open access: yesVoprosy virusologii, 1982
In combined paired cultivation of 8 Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus, multiploid virions formed in 17.8% of cases. Five clones with this effect were used in mixed infections with clones of Semliki Forest and Sindbis viruses. In these infections changes in virions of the virus progeny were observed in 20% and 16.6%, respectively.

Dephosphorylation of HuR Protein during Alphavirus Infection Is Associated with HuR Relocalization to the Cytoplasm*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2012
Background: Sindbis virus RNAs bind the cellular HuR protein and cause its relocalization to the cytoplasm. Results: HuR relocalization occurs with other alphaviruses but not with several unrelated RNA viruses.

Will Mayaro virus be responsible for the next outbreak of an arthropod-borne virus in Brazil?

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2017
Mayaro virus is an alphavirus from the Togaviridae family and is transmitted mainly by Hemagogus mosquitoes. This virus circulates in high-density tropical forests or rural areas of Central and South America causing a disease characterized by high-grade ...

Alphavirus Infection of the CNS: Entry, Dissemination, and Neurodegeneration

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Molecular & Clinical Medicine, 2015
Alphaviruses most often associated with neuroinvasive disease are limited to the Americas and include strains of EEEV, VEEV, and WEEV. The process of alphavirus entry into the CNS of infected vertebrates following challenge is not well-understood. It is thought that virus entry into the CNS depends on the inoculation route.

The low-density lipoprotein receptor promotes infection of multiple encephalitic alphaviruses

open access: yesNature Communications
Members of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family, including LDLRAD3, VLDLR, and ApoER2, were recently described as entry factors for different alphaviruses.
