Antioxidants and Diabetes

2006
Overproduction of superoxide by the mitochondrial electron transport chain is the common link between the various pathways of glucotoxicity. The increased oxidative byproducts in diabetes are the result of a glucose-induced increase in the production of reactive oxygen species and decreased antioxidant defense capacity.

Skin and antioxidants

Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, 2013
It is estimated that total sun exposure occurs non-intentionally in three quarters of our lifetimes. Our skin is exposed to majority of UV radiation during outdoor activities, e.g. walking, practicing sports, running, hiking, etc. and not when we are intentionally exposed to the sun on the beach.

Antioxidants for hypertension

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 1998
Increasing evidence implicates reactive oxygen species in the pathogenesis of hypertension and its cardiovascular complications. By altering the balance in the endothelium between vasoconstrictors such as thromboxane and isoprostanes and vasodilators such as nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species contribute to endothelium-dependent contractions and ...

Antioxidants and Osteoarthritis

2014
© Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014. All rights are reserved. Oxidative stress produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play key roles in the development of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Metabolic reactions in chondrocytes and synoviocytes produce free radicals, ROS, and their derivatives.

Antioxidants and anticarcinogens

European Journal of Cancer Prevention, 1998
The wealth of new information about the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis that has been obtained over the last decade has generated a variety of new hypotheses about the relationship between diet and cancer. The classical model for the anticarcinogenic effect of cereal fibre is based largely on assumptions about the physical effects of nonstarch ...

The Myth of Antioxidants

Scientific American, 2013
The article looks at research into the role of oxidative damage caused by free radicals in aging and the effectiveness of antioxidant vitamins to prevent age-related diseases. In a study of Caenorhabditis elegans worms genetically engineered to stop producing antioxidant enzymes, researchers found that the worms exhibited oxidative damage, but not ...

Flavonoid Antioxidants

Current Medicinal Chemistry, 2001
In order to ascertain the role of dietary flavonoids as antioxidants in vivo it is necessary to understand the chemical nature of the absorbed forms in the circulation in vivo and how the multiplicity of research findings in vitro reflect the bioactivity of flavonoids in vivo. Only when we gain adequate information on the circulating forms can we begin
