Aquaporin 4 deficiency modulates morphine pharmacological actions
Neuroscience Letters, 2008Acute administration of opioids produces analgesia, while chronic administration induces tolerance and dependence. Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) is most strongly expressed in astrocytes throughout central nervous system, and plays an important role in some pathophysiological processes in brain.

Regulation of water permeability through aquaporin-4
Neuroscience, 2010Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is a predominant water channel protein in mammalian brains that is distributed with the highest density in the perivascular and subpial astrocyte end-feet. AQP4 is a critical component of an integrated water and potassium homeostasis.

Identification of arylsulfonamides as Aquaporin 4 inhibitors
Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2007Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors AZA, EZA, and 4-acetamidobenzsulfonamide were found to inhibit human AQP4-M23 mediated water transport by 80%, 68%, and 23%, respectively, at 20 microM in an in vitro functional assay. AZA was found to have an IC50 against AQP4 of 0.9 microM. Phloretin was inactive under the same conditions.

Aquaporin‐4 in manganese‐treated cultured astrocytes
Glia, 2010AbstractManganese in excess is neurotoxic and causes CNS injury resembling that of Parkinson's disease. In brain, astrocytes predominantly take up and accumulate manganese and are thus vulnerable to its toxicity. Manganese was shown to induce cell swelling in cultured astrocytes, and oxidative/nitrosative stress (ONS) mediates such swelling.

Anti‐aquaporin‐4 antibody‐positive optic neuritis
Acta Ophthalmologica, 2009Abstract.Purpose: It has recently been reported that the anti‐aquaporin‐4 antibody (AQP4‐Ab) can be a specific marker of neuromyelitis optica. We present three cases of optic neuritis (ON) where the patients tested positive for AQP4‐Ab, but showed no neurological signs. Methods: Sera were obtained from 32 Japanese patients with ON and no other ...

Does Aquaporin-4–Seronegative Neuromyelitis Optica Exist?
JAMA Neurology, 2014With the improvement in anti–aquaporin-4 (AQP4) assay sensitivity to near 90%,1 the concept of seronegative neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is being challenged. The widely accepted criteria forNMOproposed2 in 1999 and revised3 in 2006define NMO as a disease localized to the optic nerves and spinal cord, which is not multiple sclerosis (MS).
