The design and application of associative memories for scene analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This thesis investigates a novel scene analysis system that determines the identity and the relative positions of unconstrained objects within a natural ...

Effects of psychological stress on innate immunity and metabolism in humans: a systematic analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Stress is perhaps easiest to conceptualize as a process which allows an organism to accommodate for the demands of its environment such that it can adapt to the prevailing set of conditions.

Analyzing a co-occurrence gene-interaction network to identify disease-gene association [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Bioinformatics, 2019
Understanding the genetic networks and their role in chronic diseases (e.g., cancer) is one of the important objectives of biological researchers. In this work, we present a text mining system that constructs a gene-gene-interaction network for the entire human genome and then performs network analysis to identify disease-related genes.

ABL kinase‐dependent phosphorylation of SH proteins promotes their direct interaction with CRK family SH2 domains

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
CT10 regulator of kinase (CRK) and CRK‐Like (CRKL) are signaling adaptors driving cell adhesion, motility, differentiation, and proliferation. SH2‐domain containing (SH) proteins are enriched in YXXP motifs which when phosphorylated create preferred binding sites for CRK family SH2 domains.

Identification of a gene regulatory network associated with prion replication

open access: yesThe EMBO Journal, 2014
Abstract Prions consist of aggregates of abnormal conformers of the cellular prion protein (PrP C ). They propagate by recruiting host‐encoded PrP C although the critical interacting proteins and the reasons for the differences in ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Age-related associative deficits are absent with nonwords [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Words and nonwords were used as stimuli to assess item and associative recognition memory performance in young and older adults. Participants were presented with pairs of items and then tested on both item memory (old/new items) and associative memory ...

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.
