Prostanoid Receptor-Mediated Calcium Signaling in Cultured Rat Astrocytes

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Pharmacology, 1996
We investigated prostanoid-induced intracellular Ca2+ mobilization in Ca(2+)-sensitive dye fura-2-loaded cultured astrocytes. The thromboxane (TX) A2 analog STA2 (9,11-epithio-11,12-methano-TXA2) and/or prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha (each used at 1 microM) stimulated intracellular Ca2+ mobilization in single cultured rat type 1 astrocytes. Three response

RPLP2 Mediates the Beneficial Effects of Exercise on Stress Resistance Through Muscle–Brain Communication

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A novel exercise‐inducible myokine acidic ribosomal protein P2 (RPLP2), initially identified from human trials, is presented here, whose circulating levels negatively correlate with clinical anxiety severity. Muscle‐derived RPLP2 enhances hippocampal ribosomal assembly and adult neurogenesis to rescue stress‐induced anxiety deficits.

Astrocyte ryanodine receptors facilitate gliotransmission and astroglial modulation of synaptic plasticity

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience
Intracellular Ca2+-signaling in astrocytes is instrumental for their brain “housekeeping” role and astroglial control of synaptic plasticity. An important source for elevating the cytosolic Ca2+ level in astrocytes is a release from endoplasmic reticulum

Targeted β‐Glucan‐Veiled Oral Apremilast Nanotherapy Modulates Key Dysbiosis‐Associated Gut Microbiota and Alleviates Ulcerative Colitis‐Associated Anxiety, Depression, and Neuropsychiatric Behaviors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study introduces β‐glucan‐shielded apremilast laden nanomicelles that withstand gastrointestinal degradation, selectively accumulate in inflamed colon tissue, and modulate the microbiota–gut–brain axis. The formulation restores barrier integrity, reduces systemic and neuroinflammation, and improves anxiety‐ and depression‐like behaviors in colitis

Silencing Astrocyte Elevated Gene-1 during Calcium Signaling and Glutamate Excitotoxicity

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose: During central nervous system (CNS) injury or infection, astrocytes undergo inflammatory and functional changes, ultimately regulating cognitive impairment.

The involvement of calcium carriers and of the vacuole in the glucose-induced calcium signaling and activation of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells.

open access: yes, 2012
Previous work from our laboratories demonstrated that the sugar-induced activation of plasma membrane H+-ATPase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is dependent on calcium metabolism with the contribution of calcium influx from external medium.

Neuropeptide Y—Graphene Oxide Complexes Inhibit Amygdala NPY‐Receptor Expressing Glutamatergic Pathways and Selectively Remove Aversive Memory In Vivo

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A graphene oxide nanocarrier presents neuropeptide Y specifically to NPY receptor‐expressing pathways in the amygdala, whose activation selectively suppresses aversive memory formation, without modulating anxiety responses. This circuit‐restricted drug release strategy may impact future design of neuropsychiatric therapies with limited off‐target ...

Calcium signal propagation in astrocytes

open access: yes, 2021
Astrocytes are glial cells that play many roles in maintaining homeostasis of the central nervous system and modulating both vascular and neuronal networks. Astrocytes express a range of neurotransmitter receptors that allow for communication from the neuron to astrocyte and mediate feedback and modulation of signal transmission at the synapse ...

HD‐tDCS Restores Perivascular AQP4 Polarization via PPARγ Modulation to Enhance Glymphatic Clearance After Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
HD‐tDCS promotes recovery after intracerebral hemorrhage by enhancing PPARγ‐dependent astrocyte remodeling in a mouse model of ICH. This process suppresses proinflammatory astrocytic activation, restores perivascular AQP4 repolarization, and improves glymphatic influx and efflux, thereby facilitating hematoma and perihematomal edema clearance and ...

Calcium signaling at the interface between astrocytes and brain inflammation

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Neurobiology
Astrocytes are the most prevalent glial cells of the brain and mediate vital roles in the development and function of the nervous system. Astrocytes, along with microglia, also play key roles in initiating inflammatory immune responses following brain injury, stress, or disease-related triggers.
