Dietary Soy Protein Isolate and Its Undigested High Molecular Fraction Upregulate Hepatic ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter G5 and ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter G8 mRNA and Increase Biliary Secretion of Cholesterol in Rats

open access: diamondJournal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology, 2009
Dietary soy protein isolate (SPI) and its undigested high molecular fraction (HMF) exhaustively digested with proteases, compared with casein (CAS), significantly reduced serum and liver cholesterol concentration in rats. Biliary excretion of cholesterol was significantly higher in rats fed SPI and HMF than in those fed CAS.

Effect of a Liver X Receptor Agonist on Deposition and Lymphatic Absorption of Plant Sterols in Stroke-Prone Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats Having a Mutation in ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter G5 [PDF]

open access: bronzeBioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 2011
The effects were compared of T0901317, a liver X receptor agonist, on deposition in the liver and serum and lymphatic absorption of plant sterols in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSPs) having a missense mutation in Abcg5, which codes for ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABC) G5, with those in Wistar rats.

Cholesterol feeding strongly reduces hepatic VLDL-triglyceride production in mice lacking the liver X receptor αs⃞ [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2007
The oxysterol-activated nuclear receptor liver X receptor α (LXRα) has been implicated in the control of both cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism.

Biliary elimination of cholesterol can be modulated by hepatocyte mitochondrial Aquaporin-8 in mice [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) transcription factors directly or indirectly regulate key genes involved in hepatic cholesterol homeostasis, including biliary elimination.

Excessive exogenous cholesterol activating intestinal LXRα-ABCA1/G5/G8 signaling pathway can not reverse atherosclerosis in ApoE−/− mice [PDF]

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2023
Background The long-term excessive intake of exogenous cholesterol can lead to abnormally elevated blood lipid levels and induce cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Polymorphisms of the ATP-binding cassette sterol efflux transporter genes g5 and g8 in cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus

open access: diamondAteroscleroz
Mutations with a decrease in the expression and function of the of the ATP-binding cassette genes proteins ABCG5 and ABCG8, as the main sterol efflux transporters, lead to the accumulation of xenosterols in plasma associated with changes in the lipid profile, hyperglycemia and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2).

Thematic Review Series: Lipid Transfer Proteins ABCG5 and ABCG8: more than a defense against xenosterols [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2018
The elucidation of the molecular basis of the rare disease, sitosterolemia, has revolutionized our mechanistic understanding of how dietary sterols are excreted and how cholesterol is eliminated from the body.

Polymorphisms of ATP binding cassette G5 and G8 transporters: their effect on cholesterol metabolism after moderate weight loss in overweight and obese hyperlipidemic women

open access: closedThe FASEB Journal, 2006
Objective To determine the effect of polymorphisms ABCG5 and ABCG8 transporters on changes in lipid levels, cholesterol absorption rate (ABS), fractional synthesis rate (FSR), and turnover (TO) after moderate weight loss (WL) in women. Design

Cerebral involvement in sitosterolemia [PDF]

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease
Background Sitosterolemia, an autosomal recessive condition, is characterized by impaired metabolism of plant sterols. Clinical symptoms include skin xanthoma, premature atherosclerotic disease, arthritis, and unexplained hematological abnormalities ...

Mechanism of Action of Sterols in Reducing Intracellular Cholesterol in Hypercholesterolemic HepG2 Cells [PDF]

open access: yesShipin Kexue, 2023
In this work, we established a HepG2 cell model of hypercholesterolemia in order to investigate the cholesterol-lowering activity and underlying mechanism of sterols.
