Scaffold-facilitated locomotor improvement post complete spinal cord injury: Motor axon regeneration versus endogenous neuronal relay formation.

open access: yesBiomaterials, 2019
Complete transected spinal cord injury (SCI) severely influences the quality of life and mortality rates of animals and patients. In the past decade, many simple and combinatorial therapeutic treatments have been tested in improving locomotor function in

Olfactory glia enhance neonatal axon regeneration

open access: yes, 2010
Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) migrate with olfactory axons that extend from the nasal epithelium into the olfactory bulb. Unlike other glia, OECs are thought to migrate ahead of growing axons instead of following defined axonal paths.

Translational Considerations for Injectable Biomaterials and Bioscaffolds to Repair and Regenerate Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

Electrical activity suppresses intrinsic growth competence in adult primary sensory neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The ability of neurons to regenerate in the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is often poor, leading to persistent deficits after injury. Failure of axon regeneration in the CNS has been attributed to the presence of an extrinsic inhibitory ...

Microglial responses around intrinsic CNS neurons are correlated with axonal regeneration

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Microglia/macrophages and lymphocytes (T-cells) accumulate around motor and primary sensory neurons that are regenerating axons but there is little or no microglial activation or T-cell accumulation around axotomised intrinsic CNS neurons ...

Decellularized Extracellular Matrix (dECM) in Tendon Regeneration: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Decellularized Extracellular Matrix (dECM) offers a promising solution by replicating the native tendon microenvironment and promoting regeneration. This review highlights advances in the decellularization methods, as well as their integration with emerging technologies and translational progress in tendon tissue engineering.

Genetic dissection of axon regeneration [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Neurobiology, 2011
Axon regeneration has long been studied in vertebrate model organisms and neuronal cultures. Recent development of axon regeneration paradigms in genetic model organisms, such as Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila and zebrafish, has opened an exciting field for in vivo functional dissection of regeneration pathways.

Packed for Ossification: High‐Density Bioprinting of hPDC Spheroids in HAMA Toward Endochondral Ossification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Human periosteum‐derived cell spheroids bioprinted at high density within a hyaluronic acid matrix promote fusion and hypertrophic cartilage formation in vitro. Early encapsulation enhances spheroid interaction and matrix maturation, generating scalable cartilage templates intended for endochondral bone regeneration.

Mitochondria and Caspases Tune Nmnat-Mediated Stabilization to Promote Axon Regeneration.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2016
Axon injury can lead to several cell survival responses including increased stability and axon regeneration. Using an accessible Drosophila model system, we investigated the regulation of injury responses and their relationship.

Intrinsic Control of Axon Regeneration [PDF]

open access: yesNeuron, 2016
A determinant of axon regeneration is the intrinsic growth ability of injured neurons, which dictates a battery of injury responses in axons and cell bodies. While some of these regulatory mechanisms are evolutionarily conserved, others are unique to the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) where spontaneous regeneration usually does not occur.
