Analysis of the Type VI secretion system and microbiological characteristics of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae causing urinary tract infections

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries
Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the Type VI secretion system (T6SS) and microbiological features in hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in hospitalized adults.

Interbacterial warfare in the human gut: insights from Bacteroidales’ perspective

open access: yesGut Microbes
Competition and cooperation are fundamental to the stability and evolution of ecological communities. The human gut microbiota, a dense and complex microbial ecosystem, plays a critical role in the host’s health and disease, with competitive interactions

CdiA Effectors Use Modular Receptor-Binding Domains To Recognize Target Bacteria

open access: yesmBio, 2017
Contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI) systems encode CdiA effectors, which bind to specific receptors on neighboring bacteria and deliver C-terminal toxin domains to suppress target cell growth.

Mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities of the ribotoxic stress response in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cancer cells' high translational demand creates opportunities to therapeutically target ribosome function. Ribosome stalling and collisions activate ZAKα and the ribotoxic stress response (RSR), which can trigger rapid, p53‐independent apoptosis in cancer.

A Transcriptional Regulatory Mechanism Finely Tunes the Firing of Type VI Secretion System in Response to Bacterial Enemies

open access: yesmBio, 2017
The ability to detect and measure danger from an environmental signal is paramount for bacteria to respond accordingly, deploying strategies that halt or counteract potential cellular injury and maximize survival chances. Type VI secretion systems (T6SSs)

Gut microbiota alterations in patients with non‐small‐cell lung cancer undergoing chemoradiotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We investigated the impact of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on the gut microbiota in patients with locally advanced non‐small‐cell lung cancer. Overall gut microbiota composition remained largely stable throughout CRT while antibiotic exposure may influence microbial diversity.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Type VI Secretion System in Pathogenic Escherichia coli: Structure, Role in Virulence, and Acquisition

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Bacterial pathogens utilize a myriad of mechanisms to invade mammalian hosts, damage tissue sites, and evade the immune system. One essential strategy of Gram-negative bacteria is the secretion of virulence factors through both inner and outer membranes ...
