Pan-genome insights into type VI secretion systems and their functional repertoires in Enterobacter

open access: yesmSystems
The Enterobacter genus contains 23 species that include common nosocomial pathogens capable of causing a wide variety of infections. We obtained all available Enterobacter genomes and retained 4,805 high-quality genomes after quality control.

In silico Analyses of Core Proteins and Putative Effector and Immunity Proteins for T6SS in Enterohemorrhagic E. coli

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2020
Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) has become an important pathogen that can cause diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in humans.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Baseplate Component TssK and Spatio-Temporal Assembly of T6SS in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
The Gram-negative bacteria use the contractile multi-molecular structure, called the Type VI Secretion System (T6SS) to inject toxic products into eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

Exploring the ordoliberal paradigm : the competition-democracy nexus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The present article purports to shed a new light on ordoliberalism and to explore its role in EU competition law. For this purpose, the article analyses the ordoliberal school of thought in its historical context and re-conceptualizes its understanding ...

PANoptosis in the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PANoptosis, a combination of three types of programmed cell death, is mediated by a large protein complex called a PANoptosome. In healthy bone marrow hematopoietic cells, PANoptosis is restricted by inhibitory signaling. In MDS, bone marrow cells become sensitive to the PANoptotic stimuli due to the aberrant inactivation of inhibitory signaling or ...

THE EVOLUTION OF RESTRAINT IN BACTERIAL BIOFILMS UNDER NONTRANSITIVE COMPETITION [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution, 2008
Theoretical and empirical evidence indicates that competing species can coexist if dispersal, migration, and competitive interactions occur over relatively small spatial scales. In particular, spatial structure appears to be critical to certain communities with nontransitive competition.
