Saccharomyces cerevisiae Is Capable of de Novo Pantothenic Acid Biosynthesis Involving a Novel Pathway of β-Alanine Production from Spermine [PDF]
Pantothenic acid and beta-alanine are metabolic intermediates in coenzyme A biosynthesis. Using a functional screen in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a putative amine oxidase, encoded by FMS1, was found to be rate-limiting for beta-alanine and pantothenic acid biosynthesis.

Abstract Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world. Despite its worldwide prevalence, there is currently no clear explanation of the mechanism of this disease. Moreover, the lack of reliable and accurate biomarkers makes the early detection of PD difficult.

Establishing a synthetic pathway for high-level production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid in Saccharomyces cerevisiae via β-alanine [PDF]
Microbial fermentation of renewable feedstocks into plastic monomers can decrease our fossil dependence and reduce global CO2 emissions. 3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) is a potential chemical building block for sustainable production of superabsorbent polymers and acrylic plastics.

A biosustainable production route for 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3HP), an important platform chemical, would allow 3HP to be produced without using fossil fuels. We are interested in investigating a potential biochemical route to 3HP from pyruvate through $
