Gaidropsarus mauritanicus (Gadiformes, Gaidropsaridae) a new three-bearded rockling from a deep-water coral ecosystem with a genetically verified biogeographical distribution of the genus and notes to its ecology and behavior. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract Gaidropsarus mauritanicus sp. nov. is described from one specimen collected using a grab sample from the Tanoûdêrt Canyon (ca. 20° N) off Mauritania at a depth of 595 m. The new species was further observed during eight remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives along the Mauritanian slope southwards down to the Tiguent Coral Mound Complex (~17° N)

Distribution and population structure of the smooth-hound shark, Mustelus mustelus (Linnaeus, 1758), across an oceanic archipelago: Combining several data sources to promote conservation. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2022
This work combines three sources of data to investigate the distribution and population structure of a threatened shark species. Abstract Sharks play a key role in the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems. More ecological information is essential to implement responsible management and conservation actions on this fauna, particularly at a ...

Working for Nico

open access: yesAnthropology and Humanism, Volume 48, Issue 2, Page 328-330, December 2023., 2023
Summary Over the course of the last decade, I have conducted fieldwork on the militarization of Rio de Janeiro and on the security industry that developed in response to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. This fictional short story follows two different imagined security laborers, Nico and Valesca, reflecting the racial, gendered, and class tensions

A holistic and comprehensive data approach validates the distribution of the critically endangered flapper skate (Dipturus intermedius)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 103, Issue 3, Page 516-528, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Morphological similarities between skates of the genus Dipturus in the north‐eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean have resulted in longstanding confusion, misidentification and misreporting. Current evidence indicates that the common skate is best explained as two species, the flapper skate (Dipturus intermedius) and the common blue skate (D ...

Pelagic observations of the midwater scorpionfish Ectreposebastes imus (Setarchidae) suggests a role in trophic coupling between deep‐sea habitats

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 100, Issue 2, Page 586-589, February 2022., 2022
Abstract During pelagic video transects off Santo Antão, Cabo Verde, we encountered the midwater scorpionfish Ectreposebastes imus in midwater between 300 and 800 m over a bottom depth of about 1000 m. The fish were typically positioned vertically with their heads pointing upwards. These first midwater observations of E.

Trophic strategies of two sympatric endemic pigeons in insular ecosystems: a framework for understanding spatiotemporal frugivory interactions

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 52, Issue 10, October 2021., 2021
Pigeons are considered to play key ecological roles in frugivory and seed dispersal. They have colonised numerous oceanic islands and diversified into several species in sympatry. How these species coexist in similar niches is poorly understood although dietary separation is among the mechanisms suggested to avoid trophic overlap.

Multispecies tracking reveals a major seabird hotspot in the North Atlantic

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 14, Issue 5, September/October 2021., 2021
Abstract The conservation of migratory marine species, including pelagic seabirds, is challenging because their movements span vast distances frequently beyond national jurisdictions. Here, we aim to identify important aggregations of seabirds in the North Atlantic to inform ongoing regional conservation efforts.

Molecular phylogeny and trait evolution of Madeiran land snails: radiation of the Geomitrini (Stylommatophora: Helicoidea: Geomitridae)

open access: yesCladistics, Volume 36, Issue 6, Page 594-616, December 2020., 2020
Abstract The Geomitrini is the most species‐rich group of land snails in the Madeiran Archipelago. The phylogeny of the group is reconstructed based on mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers. The timing of diversification, the colonisation history of the islands of the Madeiran Archipelago and the evolution of characters of the dart apparatus are ...
