Fisheries Trade and Blue Nutrient Flows in Pacific Island Countries

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pacific Island Countries (PICs) are located in highly productive fishing regions that supply nutrient‐rich fish to global markets. Marine fisheries are a critical source of protein and essential micronutrients for billions of people worldwide, supporting both local diets and global food security.

Predicting Historical Populations and Evaluating Shifting Baselines of Traditionally Exploited Fisheries

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Development of data‐intensive stock assessment and ecosystem‐based models has improved our understanding of shifting species abundance in response to fishing, ocean ecology, and species interactions. Along with this analytical progress is evidence that many stocks lack data required for complex models, resulting in data‐limited options for ...

A histopathologic evaluation of gross lesions excised from commercially important North Altantic marine fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Histopathologic studies of lesions found in commercially important North Atlantic marine fishes are uncommon. As part of a comprehensive Northeast Fisheries Center program ("Ocean Pulse") to evaluate environmental and resource health on the U.S ...

Research Article Isolation and characterization of polymorphic microsatellite markers for the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and cross-species amplification in the blue mackerel (S. australasicus).

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Research, 2017
In this study, 10 polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed in Scomber japonicus and were examined on 30 individuals collected from the North Pacific. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 17. The observed and expected heterozygosities per locus ranged from 0.2759 to 0.8621 and from 0.43071 to 0.9177, respectively.

The Abrupt and Persistent Decline in Recruitment Success in Northeast Arctic Cod: A Review of Probable Causes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Most of the previously large cod stocks in the North Atlantic are depleted to very low levels. A notable exception has been the Northeast Arctic cod inhabiting the Barents Sea. This cod stock reached a record high level around 2013, but since then has declined sharply, with older fish being fished out and few new recruits entering the stock ...

Preliminary data on Trachurus picturatus (Bowdich 1825) phylogeography inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequence data

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2015
The populations of marine pelagic fishes, in particular the migratory ones as the Trachurus picturatus (Bowdich 1825), may be erroneously considered an homogenous population unit because they show broad geographic distributions, large population sizes ...

Production of Marine Probiotic Bacteria in a Cost-Effective Marine Media Based on Peptones Obtained from Discarded Fish By-Products

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
The industrial production of marine bacteria with probiotic properties is limited by the excessive cost of the culture media adequate for their growth.
