Shedding light on biological sex differences and microbiota–gut–brain axis: a comprehensive review of its roles in neuropsychiatric disorders

open access: yesBiology of Sex Differences, 2022
Highlights The human microbiome is a unique set of organisms affecting health via the gut–brain axis. Neuropsychiatric disorders, eating disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders are regulated by the microbiota–gut–brain ...

The Role of the Microbiota–Gut–Brain Axis and Antibiotics in ALS and Neurodegenerative Diseases

open access: yes, 2020
The human gut hosts a wide and diverse ecosystem of microorganisms termed the microbiota, which line the walls of the digestive tract and colon where they co-metabolize digestible and indigestible food to contribute a plethora of biochemical compounds ...

The Gut-Brain Axis: How Microbiota and Host Inflammasome Influence Brain Physiology and Pathology. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The human microbiota has a fundamental role in host physiology and pathology. Gut microbial alteration, also known as dysbiosis, is a condition associated not only with gastrointestinal disorders but also with diseases affecting other distal organs ...

Role of estrogen and stress on the brain-gut axis [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 2019
Symptoms of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), including fullness, bloating, abdominal pain, and altered gastrointestinal (GI) motility, present a significant clinical problem, with a reported prevalence of 25%–40% within the general population.

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

Mineralocorticoid receptor activation contributes to intestinal fibrosis through neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin in preclinical models

open access: yesNature Communications
Intestinal fibrosis is a common complication in inflammatory bowel diseases with no specific therapy. Because mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism prevented inflammation and fibrosis in extra-intestinal organs, we aimed to evaluate mineralocorticoid ...

Caloric labels do not influence taste pleasantness and neural responses to erythritol and sucrose

open access: yesNeuroImage
Introduction: The beneficial effects of substituting sugar with non-caloric sweeteners (NCSs) remain uncertain due to the mismatch between their rewarding sweet taste and lack of energy content.

Fatty Acid Binding Protein 5 Mediates Astrocytic Pyroptosis and Neuroinflammation in Epilepsy via cGAS/STING Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Astrocytic FABP5 promotes mitochondrial stress, cGAS‐STING pathway activation, pyroptosis, and neuroinflammation in epilepsy, contributing to seizure pathology. Genetic targeting of FABP5 or pharmacological inhibition of STING alleviates epileptic phenotypes, highlighting a potential therapeutic strategy for epilepsy.
