Enzyme blockade: a nonradioactive method to determine the absolute rate of cholesterol synthesis in the brain

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2004
The standard in vivo method to determine rates of brain cholesterol synthesis involves systemic injection of 3H2O and measurement of incorporated radioactivity in sterols.

Role of cholesterol in modulating brain hyperexcitability

open access: yesEpilepsia
AbstractCholesterol is a critical molecule in the central nervous system, and imbalances in the synthesis and metabolism of brain cholesterol can result in a range of pathologies, including those related to hyperexcitability. The impact of cholesterol on disorders of epilepsy and developmental and epileptic encephalopathies is an area of growing ...

Sterol Transport Protein ORP6 Regulates Astrocytic Cholesterol Metabolism and Brain Aβ Deposition

open access: yes, 2023
The mammalian brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ of the body, requiring in situ de novo cholesterol synthesis to maintain its cholesterol requirement.

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

Advanced Dental Composite Technology via Bisilanized Dual‐Action Nanofillers for Biofilm Control

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A multimodal research strategy has led to the development of an innovative resin‐based composite (RBC) with dual antibacterial action. The S_CM‐RBC formula showed strong antibiofilm activity, excellent mechanical strength, and biosafety. It effectively controlled oral bacteria in prevention of caries recurrence, and maintained pulp health in a rat ...

Prmt6 Deficiency or Inhibition Restores Microglial Homeostasis and Promotes Scar‐Limited Repair in Adult Spinal Cord Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
After spinal cord injury, adult microglia remain persistently activated with chronic PRMT6 (protein arginine methyltransferase 6) upregulation. Prmt6 deficiency or inhibition reestablishes microglial homeostasis and promotes a scar‐limited repairment, enhancing axonal regrowth.

Cholesterol imbalance and neurotransmission defects in neurodegeneration

open access: yesExperimental and Molecular Medicine
The brain contains the highest concentration of cholesterol in the human body, which emphasizes the importance of cholesterol in brain physiology. Cholesterol is involved in neurogenesis and synaptogenesis, and age-related reductions in cholesterol ...
