Manufacturing of phycocyanin C for cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon flos – aquae. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this project it was determined that stator – rotor homogenizer may be used to disrupt Aphanizomenon flos – aquae biomass. Dissolved ammonium sulphate precipitate was filtered, at filtrate flux rate 999,1 l/ m2*h.

Evaluation of the effect of temperature, time and pH on stability of phycocyanin extracted from Spirulina platensis

open access: yes‬‭Majallah-i ̒Ilmī-i Shīlāt-i Īrān, 2018
Phycocyanin is a blue pigment of Spirulina algae that has antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, primary culture of Spirulina was performed in the modified Zarrouk medium.

A novel approach to estimate non‐algal particle absorption for improved retrieval of pigment concentrations in coastal waters

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Phytoplankton play a central role in ocean biogeochemistry and understanding their composition and variability is critical for monitoring marine ecosystem dynamics. Continuous spectrophotometric measurements (using a Seabird Sci. AC‐S) along ship tracks enable high‐resolution measurements of particle spectral absorption (apλ), and beam ...

Sustainable Overproduction of the Bacterial Pigment Indigoidine as a Natural Colorant: Stability Evaluation, Inhibition of Obesity‐Diabetes‐Related Digestive Enzymes, and Activation of AMPK–AKT

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
Production of indigoidine (IND) increased from 1.04 to 2.76 g/L using an optimized LB medium composed of glucose, l‐glutamine, tryptone, yeast extract, MgSO4·7H2O, and KH2PO4. The IND has significant inhibition properties against amylase and lipase enzymes, stimulates AMPK and AKT pathways, and improves glucose uptake.

Protective effects of C-phycocyanin on alcohol-induced acute liver injury in mice

open access: yes, 2016
Excessive alcohol consumption leads to liver disease. Extensive evidence suggests that C-phycocyanin (C-PC), a chromophore phycocyanobilin derived from Spirulina platensis, exerts protective effects against chemical-induced organ damage.

PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF PHYCOBILIPROTEINS [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Native PEC from the cyanobacterium, Mastigocladus laminosus, and its isolated α-subunit show photoreversibly photochromic reactions with difference-maxima around 502 and 570 nm in the spectral region of the α-84 phycoviolobilin chromophore.

Phycocyanin ultrasound assisted extraction from Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) using sodium phosphate buffer solvent: Mass transfer modelling and stability test

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Chemical Engineering
Microalgae Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) contains high protein content (55–70 %), consisting of approximately 20 % phycocyanin compounds as a photosynthetic pigment. Phycocyanin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Effects of Reduced Precipitation and Water Level Variability on Phytoplankton Dynamics and Thermal Structure in a Large Tropical Reservoir

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Drought is one of the most severe and complex natural hazards causing changes in water balance and impeding crucial water‐dependent ecosystem services. Over the last 25 years, multiple severe droughts linked to El Niño events have affected the Zambian and Zimbabwean regions.

The Effect of Ultraviolet Light Irradiation on Pigment Performance in Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Arthrospira platensis

open access: yesMarine Drugs
Phycocyanin, a blue pigment from Arthrospira platensis, is widely used as a natural colorant in food products, but its application is limited by its sensitivity to light and temperature during extraction and storage.

Biosynthesis of Fluorescent β Subunits of C-Phycocyanin from Spirulina subsalsa in Escherichia coli, and Their Antioxidant Properties

open access: yesMolecules, 2018
Phycocyanin, which covalently binds phycocyanobilin chromophores, is not only a candidate fluorescent probe for biological imaging, but also a potential antioxidative agent for healthcare.
