Three-Dimensional Model of Sub-Plasmalemmal Ca2+ Microdomains Evoked by the Interplay Between ORAI1 and InsP3 Receptors

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
Ca2+ signaling plays an essential role in T cell activation, which is a key step to start an adaptive immune response. During the transition from a quiescent to a fully activated state, Ca2+ microdomains characterized by reduced spatial and temporal ...

Shigella IpaA mediates actin bundling through diffusible vinculin oligomers with activation imprint

open access: yesCell Reports, 2023
Summary: Upon activation, vinculin reinforces cytoskeletal anchorage during cell adhesion. Activating ligands classically disrupt intramolecular interactions between the vinculin head and tail domains that bind to actin filaments.

Endothelin-Induced Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Depletion Waves in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells

open access: yes, 2011
Agonist-stimulated waves of elevated cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i ) regulate blood vessel tone and vasomotion in vascular smooth muscle. Previous studies employing cytoplasmic Ca2+ indicators revealed that these Ca2+ waves were generated by a ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A Thermodynamic Study of Complex Formation between 15-Crown-5 with Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ in Acetonitrile Methanol Binary Mixtures Using Conductometric Method [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, 2001
The complexation reactions between Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ metal cations with 15-crown-5 (15C5) were studied in acetonitrile (AN)-methanol (MeOH) binary mixtures at different temperatures using conductometric method. 15C54 forms 1:1 complexes with Mg2+,

Timing Matters: The Interplay between Early Mealtime, Circadian Rhythms, Gene Expression, Circadian Hormones, and Metabolism—A Narrative Review

open access: yesClocks & Sleep, 2023
Achieving synchronization between the central and peripheral body clocks is essential for ensuring optimal metabolic function. Meal timing is an emerging field of research that investigates the influence of eating patterns on our circadian rhythm ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Calcium homeostasis and role of ryanodine receptor type 1 (RyR1) in immune cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ryanodine receptors are intracellular Ca2+ release channels located in the membrane of the Endoplasmatic/Sarcoplasmatic Reticulum. Ryanodine receptor 1 isoform is preferentially expressed in skeletal muscle where it is responsible for release of Ca2 ...

Regulation of Ca2+ transport by sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase at limiting [Ca2+]

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1999
The factors regulating Ca2+ transport by isolated sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) vesicles have been studied using the fluorescent indicator Fluo-3 to monitor extravesicular free [Ca2+]. ATP, in the presence of 5 mM oxalate, which clamps intravesicular [Ca2+] at approximately 10 microM, induced a rapid decline in Fluo-3 fluorescence to reach a limiting ...
