Synthesis and Antiviral and Fungicidal Activity Evaluation of β-Carboline, Dihydro-β-carboline, Tetrahydro-β-carboline Alkaloids, and Their Derivatives

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2014
Six known β-carboline, dihydro-β-carboline, and tetrahydro-β-carboline alkaloids and a series of their derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and fungicidal activities for the first time. All of the alkaloids and some of their derivatives (compounds 3, 4, 14, and 19) exhibited higher anti-TMV ...

Beta-carbolines suppress vaginal inflammation

Cell Host & Microbe
Vaginal lactobacilli are key regulators of host inflammation, yet the mechanisms remain understudied. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Glick et al. identify a family of beta-carbolines as anti-inflammatory effectors produced by vaginal Lactobacillus species, highlighting their potential as therapeutics for vaginal inflammatory disorders.

Neurobiology of tetrahydro-β-carbolines

Life Sciences, 1980
Abstract Tetrahydro-β-carbolines (THβC's) are tricyclic compounds structurally related to the indoleamines. Recent studies have reported the in vitro and in vivo formation of these compounds in brain and other tissues. This information and other data indicating that THβC's interact relatively specifically with various aspects ...

Anticancer mechanisms of β‐carbolines

Chemical Biology & Drug Design
Abstractβ‐Carboline nucleus is therapeutically valuable in medicinal chemistry for the treatment of varied number of diseases, most importantly cancer. The potent and wide‐ranging activity of β‐carboline has established them as imperative pharmacological scaffolds especially in the cancer treatment. Numerous derivatives such as Tetrahydro β‐carbolines,

Synthesis of carboline bases

Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 1969
A study has been made of the condensation of serotonin with aldehydes to give the corresponding β-carboline derivatives. In most cases the reaction was run under biological conditions (pH 5. 4, 36‡). The following aldehydes were reacted: acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, n-octaldehyde, and formaldehyde.

Analysis of the bioactive alkaloids tetrahydro-β-carboline and β-carboline in food

Journal of Chromatography A, 2000
Simple tetrahydro-beta-carbolines (THbetaCs) and beta-carbolines (betaCs) are naturally occurring alkaloids in foods and food processing. This paper reviews the methods employed for their analysis. Procedures for THbetaC and betaC isolation and clean-up to remove interfering compounds are carried out by liquid-liquid extraction, and/or better solid ...
