Studies on the absorption of beta-carotene and the distribution of total carotenoid in human serum lipoproteins after oral administration*

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1962
The carotenoid increment in human serum was measured after the oral administration of aqueous dispersions and lipid dispersions of β-carotene with different test meal regimens. β-carotene was readily absorbed in both forms.

Metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis reveals the molecular mechanism by which blue light promotes lutein synthesis in strawberry

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture, 2023
Carotenoids are an important component of the human diet, and fruit is a primary source of carotenoids. The synthesis and regulation of carotenoids in fruit are important contributors to the formation of fruit quality.

Structures and functions of carotenoids bound to reaction centers from purple photosynthetic bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The photoprotective function of 15,15'-cis-carotenoids bound to the photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) of purple bacteria has been studied using carotenoids reconstituted into carotenoidless RCs from Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain R26.1.

Assessment of carotenoid production by Dunaliella salina in different culture systems and operation regimes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The effect of operation regime and culture system on carotenoid productivity by the halotolerant alga Dunaliella salina has been analyzed. Operation strategies tested included batch and semi continuous regime, as well as a two-stage approach run ...

A foundation for provitamin A biofortification of maize: genome-wide association and genomic prediction models of carotenoid levels. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Efforts are underway for development of crops with improved levels of provitamin A carotenoids to help combat dietary vitamin A deficiency. As a global staple crop with considerable variation in kernel carotenoid composition, maize (Zea mays L.) could ...

Genome-Wide Association Study and Pathway-Level Analysis of Kernel Color in Maize. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Rapid development and adoption of biofortified, provitamin A-dense orange maize (Zea mays L.) varieties could be facilitated by a greater understanding of the natural variation underlying kernel color, including as it relates to carotenoid biosynthesis ...

Carotenoid triplet state formation in Rhodobacter sphaeroides R-26 reaction centers exchanged with modified bacteriochlorophyll pigments and reconstituted with spheroidene [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Triplet state electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments have been carried out at X-band on Rb. sphaeroides R-26 reaction centers that have been reconstituted with the carotenoid, spheroidene, and exchanged with 132-OH-Zn-bacteriochlorophyll a and

Carotenoids.

open access: yesChimia, 2011
This short review intends to present some key facts on carotenoids in a popular scientific language on the occasion of the International Year of Chemistry. Carotenoids have a characteristic C40H56 structure and represent a market value of several hundred million Euros. Their chemical synthesis is still a demanding challenge for chemists.
