ABSTRACT Marine gastrotrichs inhabit sediments with limited available light, yet evidence suggests that photoreceptor organs are present throughout the phylum Gastrotricha. Here, we confirm this proposition with ultrastructural descriptions of photoreceptive organs in two species of Xenotrichulidae (Order Chaetonotida) that lack pigmented ocelli ...

Identification of cilia genes that affect cell-cycle progression using whole-genome transcriptome analysis in Chlamydomonas reinhardtti [PDF]
Cilia are microtubule based organelles that project from cells. Cilia are found on almost every cell type of the human body and numerous diseases, collectively termed ciliopathies, are associated with defects in cilia, including respiratory infections ...

The MacBrain Resource Center (MBRC) rhesus macaque embryonic brain histology datasets
We introduce the MacBrain Resource Center (MBRC) Collections of rhesus macaque embryonic brain tissue. Here, we illustrate histo‐ and immunohistology from our dynamically growing Collection 6, which currently contains >10,000 zoomable and downloadable images from n = 14 male and female embryos from early to late in gestation.

CenFind: a deep-learning pipeline for efficient centriole detection in microscopy datasets
Background High-throughput and selective detection of organelles in immunofluorescence images is an important but demanding task in cell biology. The centriole organelle is critical for fundamental cellular processes, and its accurate detection is key ...

Semi-automated curation of protein subcellular localization: a text mining-based approach to Gene Ontology (GO) Cellular Component curation [PDF]
Background: Manual curation of experimental data from the biomedical literature is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Nevertheless, most biological knowledge bases still rely heavily on manual curation for data extraction and entry.

Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation is the main etiologic driver of nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), including basal cell (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC), which are the most prevalent types of cancers in the US. In this study, we demonstrate that the serine/threonine kinase Polo‐like kinase 4 (PLK4) is overexpressed in NMSCs ...

RPGR protein complex regulates proteasome activity and mediates store-operated calcium entry [PDF]
Ciliopathies are a group of genetically heterogeneous disorders, characterized by defects in cilia genesis or maintenance. Mutations in the RPGR gene and its interacting partners, RPGRIP1 and RPGRIP1L, cause ciliopathies, but the function of their ...

Spaceborne and spaceborn: Physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth during interplanetary flight
Abstract Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes – fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal ...

Monoclonal antibodies targeting the interdomain region of polo‐like kinase 1 (PLK1) were delivered into living HeLa cells by electroporation to directly modulate mitotic progression. This intracellular antibody approach provides a new tool to probe PLK1 function and highlights the potential of antibodies to regulate key mitotic regulators inside cells.

The Role of Sperm Centrioles in Human Reproduction – The Known and the Unknown
Each human spermatozoon contains two remodeled centrioles that it contributes to the zygote. There, the centrioles reconstitute a centrosome that assembles the sperm aster and participate in pronuclei migration and cleavage. Thus, centriole abnormalities
