Neutral Ceramidase Is Required for the Reproduction of Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål)

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
Ceramides are bioactive sphingolipids that have been implicated in insect development; however, their role in insect reproduction remains poorly understood.

The Role of Ceramides in Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Regulation of Ceramides by Adipokines

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2020
Metabolic dysfunction is intertwined with the pathophysiology of both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Recently, one particular lipid class has been shown to influence the development and sustainment of these diseases: ceramides.

Blood-brain barrier permeability analysis of plant ceramides.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Ceramides, a type of sphingolipid, are cell membrane components and lipid mediators that modulate a variety of cell functions. In plants, ceramides are mostly present in a glucosylated glucosylceramide (GlcCer) form.

Targeting Ceramides and Adiponectin Receptors in the Islet of Langerhans for Treating Diabetes

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
Ceramides belong to the sphingolipid family and represent the central hub of the sphingolipid network. In obesity, oversupply of saturated fatty acids including palmitate raises ceramide levels which can be detrimental to cells.

Identification and quantitation of free ceramides in human platelets

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1972
Free ceramides were isolated from human platelets. Their structures were unequivocally determined by gas–liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry of the trimethylsilyl ether derivatives.

Ceramides and phospholipids in plasma extracellular vesicles are associated with high risk of major cardiovascular events after carotid endarterectomy

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Ceramides and phosphatidylcholines (PCs) are bioactive lipids and lipid bilayer membrane components. Distinct ceramides/PCs (ratios) predict cardiovascular outcome in patients with coronary artery disease.

Whole picture of human stratum corneum ceramides, including the chain-length diversity of long-chain bases

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2022
Ceramides are essential lipids for skin permeability barrier function, and a wide variety of ceramide species exist in the stratum corneum (SC). Although ceramides with long-chain bases (LCBs) of various lengths have been identified in the human SC, a ...

Fuse your mitochondria, lose appetite: an anorexic, anti‐obesity sphingolipid

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2021
Aberrant production of ceramides, the precursors of complex sphingolipids, is a hallmark of obesity and strongly linked to metabolic dysfunction (Meikle and Summers 2017).

Lipidomic Analysis to Assess the Correlation between Ceramides, Stress Hyperglycemia, and HbA1c in Acute Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesMolecules, 2023
Ceramides have been associated with cardiometabolic disease (e.g., acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and type 2 diabetes (T2D)) and adverse outcomes. Acute admission hyperglycemia (AH) is a transient glucose alteration in response to stress.

Essential lipid autacoids rewire mitochondrial energy efficiency in metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Increased liver content of DHA‐derived small lipid autacoids (i.e resolvin D1 and maresin 1) associates with enhanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid β‐oxidation and bioenergetic metabolic flux. These features provide hepatic protection from steatotic, pro‐inflammatory and fibrogenic insults.
