Complement activation in psoriasis

Plasma from 16 patients with psoriasis and 12 healthy control subjects were measured for iC3b, C4d, and Bb fragments generated by complement activation. Plasma concentrations for iC3b, C4d, and Bb fragments were found to be significantly increased in the patients with psoriasis.

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease mediated through the action of monocyte/macrophages, complement and T-lymphocytes. C5a and monocyte chemotactic factor released during complement activation in the arterial wall may participate in the initial monocyte recruitment. Assembly of C5b-9 on cells of the arterial wall may also induce cell lysis.

Neither Naegleria nor its culture supernatant was found to be directly chemotactic for human neutrophils. Interaction of Naegleria with human serum, however, resulted in the generation of a strong chemotactic stimulus. The reduction of serum activity by heat-inactivation indicated a dependence on serum complement for the interaction.

Forty patients attending the Prince Henry Hospital migraine clinic have been investigated for evidence of complement activation related to migraine. These patients had a history of clinically similar migraine attacks. Levels of serum complement components were determined in nine patients, both in and out of migraine.
