Triggered Calcium Lightning Programs Cochlear Development

open access: yesExploration, EarlyView.
Summary: Before the onset of hearing, the developing inner ear generates spontaneous calcium signals that are thought to guide maturation. In this study, we discovered a rapid and widespread calcium flash—dubbed “Ca2+ lightning”—originating from supporting cells beneath the sensory hair cells, which triggers coordinated calcium waves across the entire ...

Neurovascular Effects of Seizure and Cortical Spreading Depolarization Imaged with Widefield Optical Imaging

open access: yes
Neurovascular coupling variation in cortical spreading depolarization may be a key to understanding the origin of neurologic injury. We imaged mice with widefield optical imaging through seizure induction, cortical spreading depolarization, and eventual ...

A hyperthermic seizure unleashes a surge of spreading depolarizations in Scn1a-deficient mice

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2023
Spreading depolarization (SD) is a massive wave of cellular depolarization that slowly migrates across the brain gray matter. Cortical SD is frequently generated following brain injury, while less is understood about its potential contribution to genetic

Artificial structures for human‐machine interfaces with closed‐loop interaction

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
Artificial structures bridge sensing and feedback in closed‐loop human‐machine interfaces by providing geometry‐enabled mechanical and functional programmability. This review maps the role of artificial structures in diverse sensing modalities and feedback strategies, and illustrates their integration into closed‐loop interaction systems, highlighting ...

Active role of capillary pericytes during stimulation-induced activity and spreading depolarization

open access: yes, 2018
Spreading depolarization is assumed to be the mechanism of migraine with aura, which is accompanied by an initial predominant hyperaemic response followed by persistent vasoconstriction.

Optical Stimulation and Monitoring of the Peripheral Nervous System: Perspectives and Challenges Toward Clinical Translation

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Optical neuromodulation with IR light allows stimulation of the PNS without the need for physical contact with the target nerve or without requiring any genetic modification. The clinical translation of this technique will pave the way to the development of neural interfaces for restoring sensory feedback in individuals with limb amputation.

Noninvasive or minimally invasive neuromodulation in animal models of acute ischemic stroke: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesNeuroprotection, EarlyView.
This systematic review and meta‐analysis assessed the cytoprotective effects of neuromodulation in preclinical models of ischemic stroke. Pooled analyses showed that neuromodulation significantly reduced infarct volume and improved neurological outcomes.

Ginsenoside Rh1 Attenuates Alzheimer's Disease‐Like Deficits by Modulating Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction via SIRT1‐Related Signaling

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, EarlyView.
Rh1 attenuates oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction through SIRT1‐related signaling. ABSTRACT Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with limited therapeutic options. Ginsenoside Rh1 has been reported to possess neuroprotective properties, yet its specific role and underlying mechanisms in AD are not fully ...

Spreading Depolarization bei Patienten mit aneurysmatischer Subarachnoidalblutung

open access: yes, 2012
Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a life-threatening disease. In Ger-many, approximately 6000 patients suffer from aSAH every year. Mortality and dis-ability rates of patients reaching medical care are 30% and 30%, respectively.
