Studies on polynuclear furoquinones. Part 1: Synthesis of tri- and tetra-cyclic furoquinones simulating BCD/ABCD ring system of furoquinone diterpenoids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Synthesis of phenanthro[1,2-b]furan-10,11-dione, the core nucleus present in Tanshinone-I is described in 8–10 steps starting from 2-bromo-3,4-dihydro-1-naphthaldehyde. The bromoaldehyde was converted to methyl 2-(2-bromo-1-naphthyl)acetate or 2-(2-bromo-

Orthoquinone, Cyclic, and Acyclic α‐Diketone Natural Products: From Food Applications to Pharmacotherapy

open access: yesPhytochemicals in Food and Medicine, Volume 1, Issue 1, March 2026.
The orthoquinone metabolites from plants have antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, cytotoxic, and anti‐inflammatory effects. ABSTRACT The structural diversity of natural products is vast and fascinating, and they have been recognized as an enormously diverse source of new lead compounds.

WDR5‐H3K4me3 Epigenetic Axis Promotes TRMT6‐Dependent tRNA M1A Modification to Facilitate Triple‐Negative Breast Cancer Progression by Suppressing Ferroptosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 11, 23 February 2026.
Upregulated TRMT6 forms aberrant hypermethylation of a specific tRNA pool and serves as a predictor of poor prognosis in TNBC. This m1A modification in tRNAs enhances translation of FTH1 and FTL, reducing the pool of bioavailable Fe2⁺. Reduced Fe2+ availability impairs RSL3‐induced lipid peroxidation and tumor progression.

Cryptotanshinone induces ROS-mediated apoptosis in human gastric cancer cells

open access: yesOncotarget, 2017
Cryptotanshinone (CT), isolated from the plant Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, has been reported to have potential anticancer effects on human prostate and breast cancer cells. However, the mechanisms of action of CT on gastric cancer (GC) cells are not well understood.

Cryptotanshinone Attenuated Pathological Cardiac Remodeling In Vivo and In Vitro Experiments

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, 2023
Objective. Cardiac remodeling has been demonstrated to be the early stage and common pathway for various types of cardiomyopathy, but no specific treatment has been suggested to prevent its development and progress. This study was aimed at assessing whether Cryptotanshinone (CTS) treatment could effectively attenuate cardiac remodeling in vivo and in ...

Metabolism of Tanshinone IIA, Cryptotanshinone and Tanshinone I from Radix Salvia Miltiorrhiza in Zebrafish

open access: yesMolecules, 2012
The study aimed to investigate the potential of zebrafish in imitating mammal phase I metabolism of natural compounds. Three diterpenoid quinones from Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza, namely tanshinone IIA (TIIA), cryptotanshinone (Cry) and tanshinone I (TI ...

Emergence of Staphylococcus aureus Resistance to Antimicrobial Peptides Nisin, NZ2114 and Bacitracin Involves Multiple Phenotypic Changes

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 82-93, February 2026.
The AMP‐induced mutant Staphylococcus aureus strain nzR showed increased resistance, five gene mutations, and decreased surface anion levels. AMPs affect the NDH‐2 protein encoded by ndh gene inhibiting the growth of S. aureus. The deletion of the ndh gene promotes the development of AMPs resistance.

The Jasmonate‐Responsive SmMPK3–SmWRKY33 Module Positively Regulates Tanshinone Biosynthesis in Salvia miltiorrhiza

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 2, Page 384-401, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Tanshinones, the major bioactive diterpenes in Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, are widely used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. While jasmonates (JAs) are known to modulate tanshinones accumulation, the molecular link between JA signalling and tanshinone biosynthesis remains unclear.

Cryptotanshinone suppresses cell proliferation and glucose metabolism via STAT3/SIRT3 signaling pathway in ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesCancer Medicine, 2018
Ovarian cancer is the most malignant gynecologic cancer among women worldwide. Cryptotanshinone (CT), isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, has been identified as a potential therapeutic agent in treating several malignant tumors, but the molecular ...
