Cystatins are natural cysteine protease inhibitors which belong to a superfamily of proteins with wide occurrence in tissues. The cystatins have been shown to play multiple roles in normal and disease processes. In many different cancers the cathepsins, enzymes inhibited by cystatins, are elevated and participate in tumor growth and invasion.

Cystatin 11: A New Member of the Cystatin Type 2 Family [PDF]
Cystatin (CST)11, a novel member of the CST type 2 family of cysteine protease inhibitors, was identified in Macaca mulatta epididymis by subtractive hybridization cloning. The human CST11 gene on chromosome 20p11.2 is located near three other CST genes expressed predominantly in the male reproductive tract.

A considerable number of oral antitumor therapeutics (OAT) has the potential for causing pseudo‐worsening of kidney function (PW) due to inhibition of renal creatinine secretion, i.e., kidney function is unaffected, while creatinine‐based calculation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) erroneously indicates an impaired kidney function.

Increased serum level of cystatin C, a sensitive biomarker for renal function, seems to predict adverse cardiovascular events.
