Yeast desaturases

Biochemical Society Transactions, 2002
The Saccharomyces OLE1 gene encodes the intrinsic membrane-bound Δ-9 fatty acid desaturase. OLE1 expression is regulated at the levels of transcription and mRNA stability by nutrient fatty acids and molecular oxygen. Its transcription is controlled through two distinct promoter elements, the fatty acid response element (FAR) region, and a downstream ...

The evolution of desaturases

Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, 2003
When considering the evolution of desaturases, several different aspects come into focus, the most obvious ones being phylogenetic origins and differentiation of regioselectivities of these enzymes. In this general context the term desaturase includes all enzymes able to activate oxygen and to use this reagent for a subsequent modification of C–H bonds

Gene regulation of mammalian desaturases

Biochemical Society Transactions, 2002
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) catalyses the synthesis of oleic acid (18:1, n - 9), which is mostly esterified into triacylglycerols (TAGs) as an energy reserve. Δ-6 Desaturase (D6D) and Δ-5 desaturase (D5D) are the key enzymes for the synthesis of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), such as arachidonic acid (20:4, n - 6) and docosahexaenoic acid ...

Dihydroceramide Desaturase Activity in Tumors

Biochemistry (Moscow), 2002
Dihydroceramide desaturase activity in the transplantable mouse hepatoma-22, rat hepatoma-27, M1 sarcoma, and RS1 rat cholangiocellular carcinoma has been investigated. It was found that the dihydroceramide desaturase activity in mouse hepatoma-22 is lower than that in normal mouse liver.

Membrane‐bound phospholipid desaturases

Lipids, 1979
AbstractThis review covers studies on membrane‐bound phospholipid desaturases in yeast and rat liver carried out in this laboratory. In yeast the desaturase system was shown to effect the direct desaturation of dioleoyl‐lecithin to dilinoleoyl‐lecithin.

Regulation of stearoyl‐CoA desaturase expression

Lipids, 2004
AbstractStearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) is a regulatory enzyme in lipogenesis, catalyzing the rate‐limiting step in the overall de novo synthesis of monousaturated FA, mainly oleate and palmitoleate from stearoyl‐ and palmitoyl‐CoA, respectively.

The Specificity of Mammalian Desaturases

1977
Studies of the metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids by mammals, particularly the rat, have been done over many years both by feeding unlabelled fatty acids followed by analytical and structural studies of the resultant tissue fatty acids and by using labelled substrates in whole animals, individual organs and tissue homogenates.

Cloning and expression analysis of phytoene desaturase and ζ-carotene desaturase genes in Carica papaya

Molecular Biology Reports, 2010
The fruit flesh color of papaya is an important nutritional quality trait and is due to the accumulation of carotenoid. To elucidate the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in Carica papaya, the phytoene desaturase (PDS) and the ζ-carotene desaturase (ZDS) genes were isolated from papaya (named CpPDS and CpZDS) using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends ...

Fatty acid desaturase specificity in tetrahymena

Lipids, 1984
AbstractThe ciliate,Tetrahymena, was provided a supplement of the fatty acid [1‐14C] 18∶2Δ6,9. After a period of growth the cells were claimed, the lipids extracted, the polar lipids recovered and the mild alkali‐labile fatty acid methyl esters generated.

Structure and expression of fatty acid desaturases

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1998
Fatty acid desaturases are enzymes that introduce double bonds into fatty acyl chains. They are present in all groups of organisms, i.e., bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, and play a key role in the maintenance of the proper structure and functioning of biological membranes.
