Regulation of desaturase expression in HL60 cells

Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation, 2007
The expression of delta 5 desaturase (D5D), delta 6 desaturase (D6D) and delta 9 desaturase (D9D) was determined by RT-PCR in the human promyelocytic cell line HL60. During 72 h of culture with 10% FBS, D5D and D6D were upregulated 5 to 6-fold, whereas D9D approximately doubled.

[4] Dihydroceramide desaturase

2000
Publisher Summary Ceramide is the biosynthetic precursor of sphingomyelin and all glycosphingolipids. It anchors them in the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane so that their hydrophilic residues face the extracellular space. Because of its biosynthetic topology, glucosylceramide is anchored in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane, with its ...

The surprising diversity of Δ6-desaturase substrates

Biochemical Society Transactions, 2004
A single gene encoding a δ6-desaturase (FADS2) has been isolated and characterized in mammalian species. This δ6-desaturase plays a major role in the biosynthesis of PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids). It catalyses the rate-limiting desaturation of linoleic acid (C18:2n−6) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3n−3) required for the biosynthesis of long-chain ...

Evolution of Moth Sex Pheromone Desaturases

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2009
Moth sex pheromone communication has evolved to use complex blends of relatively simple long‐chain fatty acid precursors. Species specificity is derived from the unique stereochemistry of double bonds introduced into exact locations along the hydrocarbon backbone of fatty acids, which are reduced and then undergo a variety of chain‐shortening and ...

Counting modes of acyl-lipid desaturases

Functional Plant Biology
Fatty acid desaturases (FADs) represent a class of oxygen-dependent enzymes that dehydrogenate C–C bonds in fatty acids (FAs) producing unsaturated C=C bonds that markedly change the properties of lipid membranes, which is critical for protein and lipid diffusion, perception and transduction of environmental signals, cell division ...

The regulation of stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD)

Progress in Lipid Research, 1995
The stearoyl-CoA desaturase gene family encodes stearoyl-CoA desaturase, the key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, as well as in the regulation of this process. Because of the important role that the SCD gene product plays in fat cell metabolism, future studies on SCD1 gene expression could provide new insights into the ...

Stearoyl-CoA desaturase in development and disease

Progress in Lipid Research
The conversion of straight chain saturated fatty acids to their bent, unsaturated counterparts significantly increases their structural and functional complexity. Desaturation of fatty acids, where double bonds are introduced is an enzymatic reaction. Exploring 56 eukaryotic genomes, 275 desaturase homologs have been identified.
