A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in the FADS1 Gene is Associated with Plasma Fatty Acid and Lipid Profiles and Might Explain Gender Difference in Body Fat Distribution

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2017
Background Genotyping of the rs174547 polymorphism in the fatty acid desaturase 1 gene (FADS1) shows that it is associated with the FA composition of plasma phospholipids and lipid metabolic indices among several ethnic groups.

A comparative analyses of lipid ratios representing desaturase enzyme activity between preterm and term infants within the first ten weeks of life

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2023
Background Desaturase enzymes play a key role in several pathways including biosynthesis of poly- and mono- unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs, MUFA). In preterm infants, desaturase enzyme activity (DA) may be a rate-limiting step in maintaining PUFAs levels

Eicosapentaenoic acid and 3,10 dithia stearic acid inhibit the desaturation of trans-vaccenic acid into cis-9, trans-11-conjugated linoleic acid through different pathways in Caco-2 and T84 cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) is a key enzyme that determines the composition and metabolic fate of ingested fatty acids, in particular the conversion of trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

Trans-vaccenate is Δ13-desaturated by FADS3 in rodents

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2013
Fatty acid desaturases play critical roles in regulating the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids in all biological kingdoms. As opposed to plants, mammals are so far characterized by the absence of desaturases introducing additional double bonds at ...

The alternative pathway C20 Δ8-desaturase from the non-photosynthetic organism Acanthamoeba castellanii is an atypical cytochrome b5-fusion desaturase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A cDNA encoding a C20 Δ8-desaturase was isolated from the free-living soil amoeba, Acanthamoeba castellanii and functionally characterised by heterologous expression. The open reading frame of the A.

Metabolic Profiling Reveals an Abnormal Pattern of Serum Fatty Acids in MRL/lpr Mice Under Treatment With Prednisone

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2020
Glucocorticoids (GCs) are commonly used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Unfortunately, excessive GCs can induce many side effects associated with disordered fatty acid (FA) metabolism.

Functional characterisation of a Fads2 fatty acyl desaturase with delta6/delta8 activity and an Elovl5 with C16, C18 and C20 elongase activity in the anadromous teleost meagre (Argyrosomus regius) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The meagre, Argyrosomus regius, is a carnivorous fish with great potential to diversify finfish aquaculture in the Mediterranean. However, currently nothing is known about their essential fatty acid requirements.

Δ6- and Δ5-desaturase activities in the human fetal liver: kinetic aspects

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
Δ6- and Δ5-desaturase activities were studied in human fetal liver microsomes obtained after legally approved therapeutic abortion. Enzyme activities were measured by a radiochemical method using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

A Plant like Cytochrome P450 Subfamily CYP710C1 Gene in Leishmania donovani Encodes Sterol C-22 Desaturase and its Over-expression Leads to Resistance to Amphotericin B. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2019
BACKGROUND:Leishmania donovani is a protozoan parasite, a primary causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. Sterol produced via the mevalonate pathway, show differences in composition across biological kingdoms.

Structure and Biosynthesis of Mangotoxin Produced by the Plant Pathogen Pseudomonas syringae

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The structure of mangotoxin remained elusive for over two decades. Here, mangotoxin was isolated from the native producer, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, and was determined to be an alkyne‐containing dipeptide. Mangotoxin inhibited the growth of multidrug‐resistant human pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae.
