Genetic Mapping of Orofacial Traits Reveals a Single Genomic Region Associated With Differences in Multiple Parameters of Jaw Size Between Astyanax mexicanus Surface and Cavefish

open access: yesEvolution &Development, EarlyView.
By performing a genetic association study in cave × surface fish F2 hybrids, we discovered that premaxilla width, dentary length, and maxillary length are all significantly associated with a region on Chromosome 13 containing 109 genes. ABSTRACT The regulation of bone size is a poorly understood and complex developmental process.

A short peptide derived from late embryogenesis abundant proteins enhances acid tolerance in Escherichia coli via modulation of two‐component regulatory systems

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Expression of the LEA‐K peptide in E. coli BL21 (DE3) improved bacterial viability under acidic stress (pH4), suggesting a protective function. RNA‐sequencing of LEA‐K‐expressing vs. non‐expressing cells revealed 283 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). In silico docking linked LEA‐K to two‐component systems (TCS) proteins (Rcs, BtsS/R, and EnvZ/OmpR)

Regulation of Calcium Absorption in Caco-2 Cells by Aspartic Acid, Glutamic Acid and Their Glycine Dipeptides

open access: yesShipin gongye ke-ji
In order to investigate the mechanism of aspartic acid, glutamic acid and their glycine dipeptides on calcium ion uptake, the isothermal titration calorimetry technique, electrochemistry, and Caco-2 cell model combined with quantum mechanical calculation

Structural and functional dissection of the WH2/DAD motif of INF2, a formin linked to human inherited degenerative disorders

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The INF2 WH2/DAD domain, composed of hydrophobic and basic regions, forms a single α‐helix in solution. The hydrophobic segment is essential for INF2 function, as its deletion disrupts actin dynamics and causes nuclear abnormalities, like those seen in pathogenic INF2 DID variants. In contrast, natural INF2 WH2/DAD variants found in patients with renal

Protein tandem repeats that produce frameshifts can generate new structural states and functions

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
We explored an alternative protein structure landscape by analyzing amino acid sequences from frameshifted tandem repeats—regions prone to frameshifts. These frameshifts, especially in short repeats, lead to more drastic changes than in non‐repetitive regions, often altering structure, function, localization, and potentially contributing to disease ...

High-sensitivity profiling of dipeptides in sauce-flavor Baijiu Daqu by chemical derivatization and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry

open access: yesFood Chemistry: X
Dipeptides in sauce-flavor Baijiu Daqu are protein degradation products during the fermentation of Daqu, which are believed to play a crucial role in the flavor and quality of Baijiu.

Crystal structure of plant γ‐glutamyl peptidase 1: implications for sulfur metabolism and secondary metabolite biosynthesis

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The crystal structures of Arabidopsis thaliana γ‐glutamyl peptidase 1 (GGP1), including the covalent intermediate state, were determined. GGP1 is involved in both glutathione degradation in the primary metabolism and glutathione conjugate processing in the secondary metabolism of glucosinolate and camalexin biosynthesis.
