Multi‐environment trials and participatory validation identify soybean genotypes with mechanized harvest‐enabling traits in Ghana

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) harvesting in Ghana is predominantly manual, and labor shortages frequently delay harvest beyond physiological maturity, exacerbating shattering losses. Mechanization could mitigate these losses, but effective combine harvesting requires cultivars with elevated first pod height (FPH) to minimize header losses ...

Fish Scales: A Multifunctional Biomaterial from Nature

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, Volume 9, Issue 5, September 2026.
Fish scales demonstrate nature's solution to impact protection through overlapping multilayered architecture. This biological design combines mineralized surfaces with collagen networks to achieve both flexibility and fracture resistance. The structural principles inspire advanced protective materials and biomedical implants, where damage tolerance ...

Plant‐Derived Byproducts for Probiotic Encapsulation: A Composition–Microstructure–Function Review

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 5, September 2026.
Plant‐derived byproducts may function as matrix‐active probiotic carriers, but interpretation requires matched comparators, matrix descriptors, and stress‐specific evaluation. ABSTRACT Probiotic delivery in foods is limited by viability losses during processing, storage, and gastrointestinal (GI) transit.

Structural and Mechanical Characterization of Directionally Frozen Cellulose Scaffolds for Cultivated Meat Applications

open access: yesIsrael Journal of Chemistry, Volume 66, Issue 5, September 2026.
Bamboo‐derived cellulose suspensions were processed by high‐pressure homogenization and fabricated into porous scaffolds by directional freezing followed by freeze‐drying. Rheological characterization preceded scaffold fabrication, followed by mechanical testing and cell seeding evaluation.

Giant phytoplankton revealed by in situ imaging

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 5, September 2026.
Abstract Deployment of an autonomous Zooglider in the western Mediterranean Sea revealed the presence of long phytoplankton chains attaining maximum lengths of 6.4–10.4 mm suspended in situ. Elongate chains included the diatoms Guinardia, Proboscia, two other diatom morphologies, and solitary filaments of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium. Most elongate
