FISHing for the Miracle of Eicosapentaenoic Acid

open access: yesNew England Journal of Medicine, 2019
Bhatt et al. report in the Journal the results of the Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl–Intervention Trial (REDUCE-IT), in which 8179 high-risk patients who had elevated triglyceride levels and had been receiving statin therapy were randomly assigned to receive 2 g of icosapent ethyl twice daily or placebo containing mineral oil.1

Amyloid‐β aggregates induce vasculopathy via ferroptosis in brain endothelial cells

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
Blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption is evident in brains with amyloidopathy. In this study, we demonstrate that amyloid β (Aβ) drives abnormal lipid metabolism and lipid droplet formation in brain endothelial cells, leading to lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis.

Cytoprotective effects of α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, oleic acid and α-tocopherol on 7-ketocholesterol – Induced oxiapoptophagy: Major roles of PI3-K / PDK-1 / Akt signaling pathway and glutathione peroxidase activity in cell rescue

open access: yesCurrent Research in Toxicology
On murine N2a cells, 7-ketocholesterol induced an oxiapotophagic mode of cell death characterized by oxidative stress (reactive oxygen species overproduction on whole cells and at the mitochondrial level; lipid peroxidation), apoptosis induction (caspase-

Standard and Specialized Infant Formulas in Europe: Making, Marketing, and Health Outcomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Infant formulas are the only suitable substitute for human milk. The most common infant formulas are standard formulas based on cow's milk. In addition, there are formulas for infants showing signs and symptoms of intolerance and for clinical conditions ...

Protectin D1 and maresin 1 attenuate airway hyperreactivity induced by IL‐13 in human isolated small bronchi

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose Interleukin (IL)‐13 is implicated in airway hyperreactivity (AHR), a key feature of asthma. We explored the potential anti‐AHR activity of selected specialised pro‐resolving mediators (SPMs) in IL‐13‐induced AHR models, using human bronchial smooth muscle cells (BSMCs) and human isolated bronchi.

Blood serum from individuals with Alzheimer’s disease alters microglial phagocytosis in vitro

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research
In Alzheimer’s disease, microglial phagocytosis is engaged in the pathogenesis as it clears abnormal protein accumulations, debris, and apoptotic cells in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, but fuels neuroinflammation and accelerates disease ...

A transgenic Camelina sativa seed oil effectively replaces fish oil as a dietary source of eicosapentaenoic acid in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Fish currently supplies only 40% of the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) required to allow all individuals globally to meet the minimum intake recommendation of 500 mg/d.

The Fish Behind Fish Feed: Rethinking Transparency Using DNA Tools

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture is now the fastest growing food sector and may be a promising solution to increasing seafood demands. Yet, carnivorous aquaculture species such as salmon and seabass continue to rely on fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO), which are derived largely from pelagic fish that are sometimes key to the food security of some coastal nations. This

Dietary assessment in Whitehall II: comparison of 7d diet diary and food-frequency questionnaire and validity against biomarkers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to examine the agreement and disagreement between a 7 d diet diary (7DD) and a self-administered machine-readable food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) asking about diet in the previous year, and to validate ...
